Wow.  That’s a surprisingly low return for a productive player on a decent contract.  They must have hated his attitude.

I think that's gotta be it.  We all know about his suspension this season for his attitude and there was also this last offseason:

Quote
"I think Wood's incredibly talented, we know the numbers," Russillo said. "I think he's a tough guy to play with. I think he's a tough guy to have around... I think he's kind of a tough teammate. I'm talking about the locker room stuff, doesn't get the ball enough, shaking his head in the timeout, making sure everybody knows that he's p---ed, you know. That kind of stuff."

Not the kind of guy you want on a young team that you're trying to develop a good culture on from scratch.

Now here's something to think about.

Looks like Dallas got Wood for the #26 pick and salary filler.  And you know what beats that?  The #25 pick (plus a future pick swap if you want to sweeten the deal).  The #25 pick belonged to Boston before they traded it for White.

Would you rather be where the C's are now, 2 games away from a championship (but also 1 loss away from being eliminated).

Or would you rather have Christian Wood next season?
No one would pick Wood over a Finals appearance and it isn't an either/or.  Boston could have fashioned a trade utilizing picks next year to get it done.  and even if Houston wanted a pick this year, I suspect Boston could have acquired one using future picks to get a pick for this year to get it done.

It probably just means Boston didn't have an interest in Wood, which seems strange to me, but they certainly have more information than we do.

You have to be joking. He has played for 6 different teams in 6 seasons before this trade. There's a reason for that. I don't understand the fascination with this guy on this site.

I believe that it is true that we could have traded for Wood, or at least had the deal in place pending the conclusion of our season, but if we brought him in, his salary would count against the 2021-22 season, likely putting us well into the tax.

Wood is an interesting player at a position of need but I can understand why we weren't really in a position to get involved.

Boston can't trade for him using the 23 1st until after the season changes over, so Boston would have had to complete that trade after the season change over.  They could have had the deal in place though and just waited to execute.

Yeah, that wouldn't have been any big deal to Houston.  A trade exception and a 2023 #1 would have been significantly better than what Houston received.

Brad either didn't do due diligence (very unlikely), or he just didn't want him at that price.

Most bigs can either roll to the basket or pop for 3. For instance, Porzingis is a popper, not a roller. Dwight Powell is a roller, not a popper. Wood can do both. He can even put the ball on the floor a little bit and create his own shot. Amazing deal for the Mavs! Luka got his PnR/PnP mate.

I don't see Wood and Luka getting along. I also see Wood being moved before the trade deadline because of that relationship.

ESPN )Pelton) gave Mavs a B- and the Rockets a B+. Doesn't say anything about Wood's attitude, but says of his defense:

Quote
He can be stretched by smaller, quicker power forwards out on the perimeter and is a below-average rim protector. Over the last three seasons, opponents have made 63% of their attempts in the restricted area with Wood as the defender, according to Second Spectrum tracking, putting him in the bottom third of big men who have defended at least 500 such shots.

I think Luka can make guys look better and he certainly will make Wood look good but I'm not sure how much Wood really impacts winning.

Hard to say as he has mostly been on bad teams, but he does have a +3.4 on/off per 100 possessions for his career so there are metrics that support him being at least positive to the scoreboard.

I see Luka elevating Wood's game similarly to how CP3 elevated Ayton's game in Phoenix. Wouldn't be surprised if Wood were in the conversation for the All-Star game next season. Wood is an elite PnR big. He was scoring 1.50 PPP as a roll man prior to joining the Rockets which was ranking in the 95th percentile. He's also a reliable PnP option averaging 38% from 3 on 3.3 attempts per game throughout his career. Not his fault that the Rockets lack a PnR ball handler. Kevin Porter Jr. is a knucklehead who only cares about his own stats. Fwiw, Wood was absolutely killing it alongside Harden in the few games they played together prior to his trade to the Nets.
