Poor Gordie. Everywhere he goes to try to be The Man, people surpass him because he gets injured. Apparently he injured himself yet again.

Rumor: Hornets forward Gordon Hayward wants change of scenery
By Dan Feldman
Apr 14, 2022, 4:33 PM EDT

Gordon Hayward chose the Hornets as a 2020 free agent because they offered him $120 million, of course. But the Celtics and Pacers reportedly offered big contracts, too.

A key differentiator for Charlotte: Hayward getting the opportunity to be the go-to player and maximize his on-court contributions.

But LaMelo Ball has rapidly developed into stardom. Miles Bridges expanded his offensive game this season. Even Terry Rozier has taken strides in a larger role.

So, where does that leave Hayward?

Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report:

Word has circulated amongst rival front offices that the 32-year-old swingman would be interested in a change of scenery this offseason, although a source close to Hayward told B/R he’s primarily focused on recovering from his injured foot.

Hayward’s latest injury puts yet another dent into his value. Due $30,075,000 and $31,500,000 the next two years, he already carried the baggage of his big contract. Those high salaries will make a trade unviable, or at least difficult, with some teams.

Still, Hayward could help teams when healthy. He’s a skilled wing who can dribble, shoot and pass. An offseason trade is certainly possible. His name came up in Russell Westbrook rumors with the Lakers.

Obviously, Charlotte will determine whether Hayward gets traded. But – with an endless range of pressure he could apply – Hayward could make a deal more likely by pushing.

The report itself is interesting. Is there any team where he'd be the go-to guy?

The problem is, he can't go to a rebuilding team where he would be the go-to guy because a) he costs too much and b) he wouldn't fit their timeline if they are trying to focus on youth. I was thinking of all the teams in the playoffs and the playin, probably the only team where he might fill that role would be San Antonio, because they don't really have a headline player per se other than Murray. So he could maybe fill that role with Murray. And he's the type of player that would fit in well in Pop's system. But the cost would be prohibitive for Pop I think. They'd have to ship out a lot to match his salary.

Looking at the lottery teams, maybe a homecoming to Indiana? Haliburton is a rising star but Hayward would still be the top dog in that team, and he would have some decent support in young players like Haliburton and not-so-young ones like Hield. Again the cost would be an issue, I'm sure Charlotte would want one of those two players as part of a package.

If Utah decides to trade Gobert I wonder if GH would want to go back there and play with Mitchell?

If Charlotte were willing to give up young talent (Washington, Boughknight, McDaniels) then it could maybe work, but I'm not sure a) Utah decides to move Rudy, and b) that's the package they'd choose.

I feel bad for him to some extent, because it's never easy to see your body deteriorate.

But, I'm not all that sympathetic to the desire to be the man at this point in his career.  He's simply not reliable enough.  I give him credit:  on the court, he blends in and is really good as a 3rd or 4th who helps facilitate the offense.  But, I think his expectations are too high.

That said, Jake Fischer routinely makes stuff up, and "word has circulated amongst rival front offices" doesn't inspire confidence that this is a real thing.  If anything, it will be the Charlotte front office pushing to get off his contract.

Haliburton's value far exceeds anything Hayward and picks could bring back. We couldn't even dream of getting Hali for in-his-prime, newly signed, DPOY Marcus Smart. Hield would be nice salary filler and could probably get conversations started, since - as Roy stated - this would be more about CHA getting out of his contract than getting actual value for him. Heck, the article references Westbrook - I think that's all you need to know about Hayward's value right now.

As a side note, it's kind-of annoying that both Hayward and Horford were so quick to leave Boston, when it was obviously a great situation for both of them (especially Horford). We've had to give up so many picks (1st for Al, five 2nds and counting for the continuation of the Hayward TPEs) and lost Rozier in the process. I guess we now have Derek White, but that cost an additional 1st, a swap, and Romeo.

Lakers trade of Westbrook looking a lot more likely with this report.

Something like Westbrook, Reaves for Hayward, Oubre
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Charlotte says no.   How does Westbrook help them?   An unhappy Hayward helps this team more then a need the ball in their hand Westbrook.

I could see a team like Philly offering Harris.  (I also agree with Utah)

Yeah I know Hayward's always hurt but idk why Charlotte is motivated to do this. If anything, it'd also probably affect their young guys since Westbrook would absolutely continue to be a diva in Charlotte and stunt their growth. It'd be a real sign Charlotte is going nowhere adding him.

Get out of the last year of Hayward's contract.  Get a star for tickets for a year.  Get a decent young player on a minimum contract for a couple of years.
