I know our trade exception for Fournier is $17.1 million.  That means that we can trade for somebody making up to $17.2 million.

My question is, could we trade for a player making $17 million, and almost immediately trading that player for somebody making $18.5 million (i.e., Harrison Barnes)

Has this ever been done?  Is there a rule against it?  Would it be considered circumventing cap rules?

It would probably be nixed as a cap rule circumvention if it happened too quickly.  There was a team in the last few years with either a TPE or a DPE that led to speculation of such a manuever, and there were at least rumors of a league memo.

That said, the C’s could probably acquire a player with the TPE on draft night and trade him at the start of training camp with no issue.

Isn't there a rule where if you are over the cap you can't trade a player you just acquired within like 60 days?

I think a team like the Thunder could pull this off being under the cap, but not a contending team over the cap.

But I may be wrong on this.

No, the rule is about aggregating (combining) player salaries in a trade.  You can trade an acquired player by himself pretty much any time that you want.

Gotchya. I knew about the aggregating rule. Maybe I'm thinking of when you sign a player.

This is a clever idea though.

You threw out the idea of Harrison Barnes. This is off topic, but I hope not. He looked terrible when we played the Kings a few days ago. He looked like Marvin Williams his last year playing for the Bucks.

Yeah, there are rules about how soon you can trade free agents, and how soon you can trade signed draft picks.

Go with the larger sample size.  On the season:  16.8 points / 5.8 rebounds / 2.5 assists / 40.8 3PT%
