Let’s not get too out of it. Danny nailed the drafting of JT and JB, arguably the best players drafted in 2017 and 2016 (some might pick Mitchell and Ingram instead, but I would disagree vehemently…although possibly might give the nod to Simmons over JB). If he was a great drafter, he would have chosen Dejounte Murray instead of the French Dancing Bear in 2016, and Pascal Siakam instead of Zizic later in the first. Imagine how loaded we would be today if that had been done. He does get major props for Timelord in 2018 and Grant in 2019. It’s a [dang] shame Haliburton did not fall to us in 2020. We also should have kept Rozier and Horford instead of signing Kemba.

The biggest what-if: Imagine if we had drafted Giannis instead of Kelly, and kept the 16th overall pick in 2013 to also draft Gobert. Then still drafted Smart, JT, and JB. That would give us:

Smart
Brown
Tatum
Giannis
Gobert

We would clearly be on our 4th or 5th straight title right now. Just two draft moves away from a 1960s-esque dynasty…
I must have missed the part where good drafter = perfect drafter.

Your expectations are incredibly unreasonable. "Why didn't DA pick the best player available (some of whom would take years to develop) at every pick??"
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Yeah Giannis is a bummer but even the people who didn’t like the Olynyk pick wouldn’t have taken Giannis with it at the time.

That’s hindsight.

I’m sure if you go back to the 2013 draft threads on here there will be some people who absolutely wanted Giannis over Olynyk. Probably not as many who decry the pick today, but some.

Our statistically historically great starting 5 has 4 homegrown talents.

Thank you Danny Ainge. Lets remember this when we bash our former GM for being a terrible drafter.

So much more fun to root for these guys than trading for mercurial superstars.

It’s truly remarkable. The trade and draft choice of Tatum alone could be one of the best of all-time. Hats off to Ainge. He was so smart with his management and picks.

Robert Williams is looking more and more like another home run and the 5 position was always a tough find (drafting). Heckuva pick..

I can’t help but think our bench would even be better with TRozier and Olynyk.

2 players regularly ripped here for being unwise picks.

I remember when the entire league said ‘who’ when Ainge drafted Rozier. They couldn’t believe the pick and how high he went. Not questioning that one anymore.

It’s so tough to assess & draft from overseas. I thought Olynyk was the smarter pick. Obviously, he missed along with many other executives.

I don’t think Seth Curry or Jason Williams are great comparisons. I see Curry more a shooting guard that could play point in a pinch, and Pritchard more of a point guard that can play off the ball. Pritchard also doesn’t really have the flash that Jason Williams had. I was hoping for more along the lines of a poor man’s Mark Price, but I realize that is reaching. If he is like our Steve Kerr, I’ll take that!

I like the Price comparison. I always thought of Van Fleet, but Pritchard will have to perform better on the defensive end for that one. Offensively though, I think Pritchard can be better than Van Fleet.

His shot is already so darn good, and you can see he’s extending that range out even more past the 3-pt line. Very scary in a couple years from out there. Handling the ball needs more time, but he can get into his shot most of the time. I also think his bball IQ is solid already. He moves the ball and doesn’t sit around with it or dribble a lot. I love this kids chances. Can’t wait to see what he develops into in 2/3 years.

I sort of stopped reading at Pritchard being a future all star lol. Pritchard is destined to be a 2/3rd pg option (and possibly a solid one). He’s never going to start on a contender and he’s never going to sniff an all star vote let alone all star game lol.

Definitive claims like this never age well…

Fairly positive this claim will age just fine lol. I like Pritchard but he’s not going to ever make an all star team. Could be a solid rotation/bench guy though.

A lot of people said that about Terry Rozier after year 1. And Jaylen Brown. And Robert Williams. And Tony Allen…..solid rotation type guys.

Keep the development going. Anything is possible.

We will see how the development goes.

Sorry, but who said JB wasn’t going to be an all star caliber player? He was raw out of college but he always had a high ceiling. The other guys were rotation players but none of them were perennial all star caliber players.

There's a huge gulf between starting on a contender and being an All-Star.

JB was the 3rd overall pick. He wasnt drafted to be “a starter”. He was drafted to be an all star. Took him a few years but I don’t think anyone thought he didn’t have the tools or skill to get there based off where he was drafted.
