On the surface it seems like Philly has some leverage, as Harden could simply leave in the off-season and he’s all but asking out now.
But Philly is more desperate than it might appear. Embiid is having an MVP-caliber year. That is never a guarantee for any player any year not named Lebron 2010-2020, and less-so for a player with Embiid’s injury history and need to be in peak physical shape. I.e. now is the time for Philly to cash in and add someone who can contribute to a Finals push. You gotta do it this season. Maybe they’ll be a dynasty for the next 4 years, or maybe this is it. Can’t take that chance with a guy like Embiid.
Morey is hoping other teams will make a competitive offer for Simmons today so that Brooklyn feels the pressure to get the deal done. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if other teams put deals out for Harden, too. But Philly is (also) the team under pressure. Brooklyn is too but what they really need is for KD and Irving to play consistently. They can lose Harden for nothing and still compete in the East with those two.
