Came here to post this.  Could he have played his last game in Washington?

How funny would it be if Portland goes after Beal and then tries to act like they're so much better than they were with CJ?

Tough break (tear) for Brad.

Makes sense to shut him down and get this done.  They will end up with a better draft pick.  You wouldn't expect Beal to want to go into free agency immediately following surgery, maybe this makes him taking the option for next season more likely vs. opting out.  A wrist is not the same as a knee of course.

Complicated situation for both Beal and the Wizards.

I think Beal's free agency is exactly why he got this done now.  As one of the top 2 players on the free agent markets, teams won't worry about his surgery so long as it's finished and he's already going through rehab.  Getting this done in April after the season would a) give teams more concern about his medicals, and b) continue to hurt his production, because a shooter needs his wrists.

As soon as I saw the headline, I thought he was doing the surgery now with free agency in mind. If your Washington, it'll be tough cutting the rest of his checks this season, with the idea that Beal might be rehabbing for his next team on the Wizards dime.

I just read, the surgery is on his left wrist, so it shouldn't effect his ability to shoot.

I really wonder if Beal would have been able to come back this season, if we would have made a play for him.

As it is, it seems more likely now that we duck the tax and get an asset back.

Meh, they'll probably play just about as well without Beal as they did with Beal.

Dinwiddie should see a major jump in his play now that he gets to dominate the ball.

Bradley Beal is eligible to sign a five-year, $245M contract with the Wizards this summer. Beal has a $36.4M player option on next season.

Beal to Washington: “If you’re not giving me the max, I’ll have surgery before the trade deadline and decline my player option to become an UFA and leave so that you don’t get anything in return.”

Not questioning the legitimacy of the injury, the timing of the surgery is weird. The first thing that came to my mind was the Kyrie-Cavs situation before being traded to Boston.

The early reporting is the Wizards and Beal jointly decided he needed surgery after consulting an outside expert.  Apparently it was injured in the third quarter of a game a week or so ago (so it wasn't some wear-and-tear injury, but rather something that specifically happened), and non-surgical treatment had shown no improvement since.  Now, that could just be spin because neither party wants to be the center of attention.  Or it could be that their goals are aligned to a degree -- the Wizards aren't playing well and would rather have a better draft pick, and Beal would like to enter free agency healthy.  Also, the Wizards would like to resign Beal, so they would like him healthy in the future.
