Horford and Rob works financially for Gobert. Other players can be added in. Add three 1st rounders and I think that trade makes sense.
Huh? Three first round picks? From the Jazz or Celtics?
Gobert will be a DPOY candidate next year making close to $40MM, and locked in at a very high price. Rob will be a DPOY candidate making $10MM, and locked in long term at a great rate. In terms of skills, Rob is otherwise arguably the better player.
Why on earth would you angle to trade for Gobert when you already have Williams — other than a relentless desire to make trades for trade’s sake?
It's called the if-you're-a-Celtic-you-must-suck bias. It leads to huge numbers of picks being thrown away, not to mention players...
or its called Gobert is just flat out better than Rob and it isn't close. There isn't a team in the league that would take Rob over Rudy.
Not a team in the league? Maybe if there was no salary cap or lux tax. The difference between their salaries is almost enough for a max player. The difference on the court is not close to that large and having a player of Rob’s caliber on this contract is a luxury. On that basis alone many teams would novo for Rob.
Second, opposing teams can attack Gobert in the playoffs. We will see what happens with Rob; I very much doing the he’s got the same vulnerabilities.
Finally, Rob isn’t done improving. Before the end of this contract I believe he’s making an all-star game. For some teams his timeline makes more sense than Govert’s. RG is 29.
Rudy will be a better player than Rob over the life of their contracts. That just matters. Obviously the contract amount is way better for Rob, but Rob also hasn't shown the ability to stay on the court and when he is on it, he just isn't as good. And Boston isn't exactly set up to have cap room anytime soon. And for as flawed as Rudy is offensively, he looks like Wilt comparted to Rob. Rob is a terrible offensive player (he is fine as a passer and can obviously finish at the rim, but provides nothing else) and he hasn't really shown any propensity to improve. I get it, Rob is a Celtic, so we have to collectively make him better than he is, but he is an unskilled athlete that uses his athleticism well defensively, but that is what he is. Rudy is one of the most skilled big men in the game. He is a multiple time DPOY. He is a multiple time all star, All NBA, and 1st Team All Defense player. We all hope Rob can sniff those things, but that is Rudy right now, and there is no reason to wait and hope that Rob becomes anywhere close to what Rudy is right now.
I don't know if Rudy would elevate Boston into title contention, but they'd be a heck of a lot closer than they are right now, and it is worth a shot, especially in this year where Milwaukee looks like the only really cohesive and good team in the East (Brooklyn obviously could put it together when Durant comes back, but who knows for sure). Take the shot and continue to build around Tatum, Brown, and Gobert if it doesn't work out this spring.
