and likely offered Schroder for him:

I would love that deal. Smith would fill the need a PF, but would the Suns be interested?

How is Smith on D? He would probably get some of Al’s minutes I guess, to keep Al fresh for the playoffs?

I don't know why PHO would want Schroder. They already got 2 PGs superior to him.

3 way deal.

Also, it’s pure speculation. It could just as easily be Hermangomez and a lesser asset going out.

I wasn’t a fan of Smith coming out of college and really worry his production as a starter for the Suns (17pt 9rb 1blk) is inflated by Chris Paul.

I’m not sold that PF is a need for the Cs, I would rather see a big wing added and started next to Tatum rather then another true big man. Best cast Smith’s offense is the real deal and he is a John Collins like PF but I’m not sold even Collins is a great fit for this team.

You mean like: Jaylen Brown? Pretty sure a starting wing isn’t what this team needs.

This would strictly be a short term move since the Cs could almost certainly not resign him in the off-season.

I’m really not a fan of the two big lineups and I have liked the lineups with Grant(swing) or J Rich (wing) along side the Jays, a PG, and a Big. Long term for the Jays to win together I think they need a 3rd scoring option on the perimeter to start along side (J Grant, Hield, Barnes, Powell) or a connecting type wing (K Anderson, Ingles).

As for J Smith being a short term, if traded for I would expect him to be resigned as a piece for the future (he is 21) other wise the Cs are better off trading DS for 2nds that can be assets down the road.

I have no idea why you think this would be a short term move.  It’s pretty unlikely Smith is going to get more than $4.7 million this summer.

I don’t think he’s a great fit here this year, because his success this season has been as a 5.  But the C’s are unlikely to get outbid this summer if they traded for him and wanted to retain him.

Agree on fit. Point is he’s a UFA — if he flourishes here, yet the Cs prioritize other areas this off-season, there’s a very good chance he’s not here next year. And if he doesn’t, why would they sign him?

If the Cs can’t get anything more than a 2nd rounder for Schroeder, they may prefer to take a flier on a player like Smith instead.

They’d play him in a reserve role for half a season, and my point is with most teams very cap restricted, and half of them on pace for the luxury tax, he isn’t going to get more than $4.7 on half a productive season as a reserve.  Some summers, he might, but this year, it’s highly unlikely.

On how he fits - the team is clearly going to need center help behind Rob in the years to come. If they think they could keep him (does the team get RFA rights?) then kicking the tires on him seems like it’s worth a more than a 2d round pick.
