Assume we send out matching contracts.  If we wanted to put five drafts worth of picks on the line, what could we get?  And would you want to do that trade?  What if we added another first and/or swap?

if you're sending out that kind of draft capital (basically giving up the near-future of your franchise), you'd better be getting back a piece that you think makes you a title contender for most or all of the period in which you're giving up draft rights.

I honestly don't know what kind of player would do that for the Celtics. I think it would need to be a situation where a player like Embiid wants to be traded and has named the Celtics as a place they'd want to be long term.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

Hopefully, Ben Simmons. Realistically, I don't think the Sixers want to deal with us.

Another name that comes to mind is Lillard. Not sure whether I'd pull the trigger. I'd much rather have Simmons.

If Ben Simmons was the best we could get for that, I'd be very disappointed, to say the least.

I bet you'd stop being disappointed once he'd transform us into legit contenders for years to come. :P

Maybe Sabonis out of Indiana but that is too rich for my blood. I don't know, maybe, maybe it is worthwhile.

5 unprotected 1sts should generally be worth most any player outside the top 5 or so in the game, and a handful of top-5 potential players who've recently signed long extensions (e.g. Trae Young, Luka Doncic, Bam).  I don't include SGA in that group of Doncic and Young, and he would be my choice.

Donovan Mitchell

Utah's locker room would have to get very toxic in a very public way but I could see Mitchell being motivated to come play with Brown and Tatum and that is probably a championship core if you could fill the roster out correctly.

Not sure if DA advising the team would help or hurt since he'd clearly be viewed as a biased source. Certainly wouldn't be as bad as Rich Paul pulling Anthony Davis to the Lakers.

Depends. Right now we are about as close to the 9th best lottery odds as we are the 20th overall pick. So which way does the rets of the year go?

If Tatum and/or Brown were to go down in the second half we could chase a decent pick with lottery upside.

Could Danny be the next McHale??

Doesn't seem to be in his DNA.
Yup

So 3 picks + swaps + matching (Horford and Richardson get to about $40M).

I don't think too many teams would trade a star player for that.  Maybe Towns?  I would do Towns.  You could probably get John Wall.

I don't think this gets us Lillard.

You could get John Wall for a second if you’re willing to take on his salary for expirings.

I think Donovan & Tatum would be like the 4 seed right now, with Brown they would be really nasty.  If we could Trade Smart, Horford and Schroeder plus a bunch of picks for him it would be a coup.
