It seems almost inevitable they will make some big moves before the deadline. Their current team is an absolute disaster. I don’t know how much of it is decline, poor fit or poor coaching but having nurkic, Powell, lillard, Covington, nance. They should not be one of the worst teams in the league. Do we make sense for some of these guys in a change of scenario trade for both teams? They could probably really use smart.

Portland have gone downhill ever since their GM undervalued the contributions of Aminu and Harkless a couple of seasons ago. Their defensive contributions were key to counter-balancing the weaknesses of their backcourt and spot up shooting were key to providing floor spacing for their scoring guards. It gave them a balanced team that could play two-way basketball.

They have not had a two way basketball team since they were discarded as low value unnecessary to pay or even replace starters.

I can't see any use of Smart there. They have the two small guards in McCollum and Lillard and then another small SG in Norman Powell.

They need athletic two way forwards. They need more guys like Covington. Not more small guards.

Or ... if they blow it up, then they need picks and/or prospects. Not vets like Smart.

Well I am saying we would be getting back powell or McCollum in exchange for smart because their backcourt defense is awful. Also smart definitely does not play like a small guard. I am not sure I would even call him that, but he can definitely guard players McCollum couldn’t dream of.

Ah okay, I see where you are coming from. I thought it was Smart for Covington, Nance or Nurkic.

I don't think Smart is valuable enough to justify giving up McCollum. They need a 2nd star next to Lillard so any trade involving McCollum needs to bring back a 2nd star; not a role player. If McCollum is traded for less than a star, then it is full on rebuilding time.

Smart for Norman Powell makes sense. Smart gives them a good three guard rotation next to Lillard and McCollum. Powell comes to Boston and gives us a real shooter at SG.

I'm not sure I'd do Smart for Powell though. I am not that high on Powell. I feel he has lost his hustle these last couple of years and is too focused on his scoring. He was a good defender earlier in his career but is now below average. Then you have logjam issues with Jaylen (SG) Tatum (SF) Horford (PF) big lineups and issues at PG if Pritchard cannot be consistent enough to take over (which is a question given his bad start this year).

I'd like to get a long term piece back for Smart. I am not sure Powell is that. I feel he is more of a band-aid.

Powell is also another guy with limited handles and passing skills. So the shooting is good and the scoring is good but the team offense is dodgy -- Spacing = good. Ball-handling = bad. Passing = bad.

I'd love Lillard. I reckon his trade value is down near where Harden's trade value was when Harden left Houston. So a trade package of multiple picks, Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert. Boston could make a similar offer to that for Lillard.

Portland haven't quite decided to move on from Lillard yet but at least they are starting to question whether they can win there with him or whether they need to rebuild. Lillard could become available soon. Maybe the trade deadline or next summer. Boston should be lying wait.

A Big 3 of Lillard, Tatum and Jaylen is Championship caliber.

As I've been saying for awhile I think something like this makes a lot of sense for both teams

McCollum, Snell

for

Smart, Hernangomez, Nesmith, Langford, 22 1st, 24 1st (top 4)

The Blazers can then see what they look like with Lillard for the rest of the year and then over the summer either trade Smart and Lillard or see if they can build around them using the extra young players and draft picks.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I would imagine that Portland probably prefers Simmons to a non-J's trade with Boston.  They are in a different situation than Houston.

I would do this trade. I would also like to see Lillard along a better defensive guard for the first time in his career. The blazers need to do something more than just about any team in the league.

Interesting assessment of value to the Harden trade. Had we resigned Fournier he would’ve been the perfect replica of Levert in this deal with RWIII almost perfect match with Jarrett Allen (picks - having pick 16 sure would look good right now wouldn’t it).

So now package might looks like Smart + RWIII + Picks? I don’t think Portland bites without Jaylen. But had we had Fournier, I think we could pull it off. Coulda shoulda woulda.

I mean we have a better record than them and they have been significantly healthier. Outside of mccollum almost all their top 5-6 players have been playing all season unless I missed something (I think Lillard missed like 3 games) They are 13-20 and seem worse off than us.

I would trade Hernangomez and Schroder for Nance and Dennis Smith Jr.  Always liked both guys. I haven’t run the numbers so add pieces on either end to make the salaries work.

I was really high on Nance before Portland, but he seems to not really be making a big positive impact.
