Phoenix Suns receive:
Christian Wood

Houston Rockets receive:
Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Juancho Hernangomez, Dennis Schroder, Robert Williams (2 long term pieces and cap space with expiring contracts)

Celtics receive:
John Wall, Deandre Ayton

New Lineup:
John Wall
Josh Richardson
Jaylen Brown
Jayson Tatum
Deandre Ayton

Both Wall + Ayton are off books this year. We trial Ayton as the long term 3rd piece (max contract) or reset and go after Beal.

First question: Why for Phoenix?

Second:  Why is Houston making out like bandits?

Also, Wall isn’t off the books this year.

Phoenix was hesitant to give Ayton the 5 year max and there is friction as a result. They can replace with a more affordable option in Wood. They also have serious cap issues.

Houston is losing an up and coming big and a 5x all star quality PG.

Wall is player option and with a thinning free agent class as a result of early extensions and him not getting younger, he may opt to test free agency this year to get a 3-4 year deal locked in before his age 33/34 season.

Wall makes $47.4 million next year.

Which crazy pants team would offer a four year deal that makes opting out make sense?  I mean, a 3 year contract at $16 million per season — which no team would offer — means he’d spend two years literally playing for free.

He’s not opting out.  I’ll take 10% of my annual salary on that.

Dragic just signed a contract at age 35 for $19.5m per year. Where does $16 come from?

Wall is a 5x all star with career averages of 21ppg and 7apg.

Two reasons seem extremely, extremely unlikely. And one seems to have a nice sugar coating on it.

Phoenix didn't close the deal early with Ayton, but Phoenix hasn't said they have given up on getting Ayton signed and Ayton hasn't made any noise about trying to move on.

That deal will get done after the season. Phoenix isn't moving a key piece when aspirations are a 2022 NBA title

Wall isn't giving up $47 million in one year to possibly never sign a multi-year deal that could be valued at significantly less than $47 million. I think Wall should consider himself likely to get a multi-year deal valued at more than the full MLE number of $9.7 million or so a year. Wall could very easily be giving up $47 million to garner a one year prove it deal similar to Dennis Schröder's one year $5.9 deal he signed with Boston.

Chances of Wall opting out of $47 million are as close to 0 as you can get.

Houston moving Wall at the expense of Woods is something I think Houston would be very fine doing, because they really don't want to pay the $47 million next year for Wall or the possibly $20+ million they still owe him this year. It's a huge win for them if they get great assets back. A couple expiring contracts. A contract they can decide not to pick up next year and save $12 million. One possible stud of  a center at 23 and one of the best defensive guards in the game who is only entering his prime.

Massive win for Houston.

Yeah, cut out Phoenix, as nick said.  Maybe Wood is the cost of shedding $40 million

HOU trades:  Wood, Wall

BOS trades:  Horford, Herangomez, Romeo, takes Wood into trade exception, lottery protected #1

We flip Schroder to another team to another team.

I don’t know if I’d do it, but that’s closer to what I think would be fair.

Good luck convincing Wyc to pay the luxury tax if we absorb Wood's salary on top of adding Wall's bloated contract.

I don't expect us to use the TPE during the season. Not a significant part of it anyway. The lux tax would explode through the roof. Maybe during the offseason if an opportunity arises.

I guess we could include Smart and JRich in the trade to shed more salary. Perhaps we could re-route Smart to a 3rd team cause the Rockets are in rebuild mode.

Basketball-wise, I reckon Wall would be a decent-ish fit on the Celtics. We could have a use for his passing ability. Unfortunately, he's a below average shooter. He needs the ball in his hands to maximize his effectiveness. Needless to say, he's massively overpaid. I'd much rather have Smart at 14 mil over Wall at 44 mil. At least his contract becomes an expiring next season. We could attach a bunch of picks to it and go after a disgruntled star to create a big 3 (or big 4 with Wood). We might even be able to go after Beal via sign and trade. Haven't put down the numbers, but I believe we could end up below the apron.

I actually think Wall would be a good player on the court for Boston and would gladly get rid of Smart without giving it any thought.  Have to get Wood or something else of value to take on Wall though as his contract is just terrible.

I do think a 3 team trade makes the most sense though as Smart makes no sense for the Rockets

so on or after January 20th when Smart can be traded.

Boston - Wall, Wood
Houston - Wiggins, Looney, Hernangomez, BOS 1st (lotto)
Golden St. - Horford, Smart

Other variations would work where Horford goes to Houston and some younger pieces like Kuminga go to to Houston instead of Wiggins (and Boston's 1st may then go to GS).  But I actually like that trade for all 3 teams.  I think Horford would be fantastic in GS for a title run this year and Smart gives them some extra defensive toughness.  They can then cut Horford this summer and get some savings or just keep him for a run next year as well.  As I said, I think Wall on the floor would work well and I really like Wood.  Houston gets a nice youngish all star caliber player on a better contract, big salary savings, and a 1st.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

You're probably right, but that's what most said about Hayward going into his option year.  And he opted out for a better deal.   Same with Chris Paul last off season.  It can happen.  Especially if Wall got traded and started to play lights out this season.  Unlikely, but not unfathomable.

GSW have fallen in love with Wiggins.  Involving them in a trade like this does not make a lot of sense.  I am intrigued about Wall, however, coming to the Celtics. I'd have to look at recent tape of him to get a better sense of what he has left post-injury.   In his prime was an elite playmaking point guard.

Nick — to his credit — has been advocating for such a deal for a month or two. I think there’s some merit to it.
