The number of assists in the Bucks game.
Great ball movement, getting a ton of open shots. This is what we thought was possible this season.
Marcus Smart had a stellar eleven assists and zero turnovers.
It was especially gratifying to see Tatum dishing to Brown and vice versa.
Brown had five assists; Tatum and Horford had four each.
There's a number of things that go into that:
1. the # of times they pass the ball to create a possession opportunity (the Potential Assist metric)
2. the # of times a player successfully converted a potential assist by making a shot (FG%)
3. the number of turnovers (turnovers)
And then you look at the impact that has on their defense...if they make shots it takes away transition opportunities for the other team.
To me it's no one thing, they are all interlinked, but it all starts with playing the right way whether they make shots or not. If they start missing shots they let it affect their defense, which then forces them to play catch up offensively, then they devolve into more iso to try to make sure they get buckets, and then it becomes a "cascading series of failures". Since they're not the greatest of shooters they will miss shots...but they should continue to try to get high potential assist numbers and they should make sure they don't let poor offense affect their defense. Which is a discipline thing first and foremost. They looked great last night because they shot 40+% from 3 and so the ball flew around and they created a lot of open shots. It's when they are missing that they let it affect other parts of their game, which they can't allow to happen.
