The comparisons to Rondo are more about their similar builds rather than the similarities in their games.  Schroder is a far better shooter/scorer and Rondo was/is a much better passer, has better court vision.  The only only similarity I see is that both dribble too much.  But Schroder is likely to dribble around and then shoot but Rondo would have dribbled around and then forced a pass.

As to keeping Schroder beyond this year, I am not entirely clear on the specifics of the rules but accept the bottom line that all we can offer is the MLE and that it is unlikely that we would be able to sign him beyond this season.  The best long term value may be to trade him this season.  He could help a contending team, or at least those that have a PG need like Philly or the Nets.  Maybe some other teams also.

Even though I am critical of Schroder over dribbling, I like what he has done overall.  He is a good player, a solid starting NBA PG.

I think the comparisons started because Schroder himself said Rondo was his favorite player coming into the league and they are both quick on drives in the same way. Schroder evolved into the more modern player while Rondo was a recovering player/older by the time he needed to make the same adjustments to fit the modern game.

I think it's both.  To the casual observer their games are similar.  Only the frequent watcher can really see the differences.

Also, they're both;

- small PGs with similar build
- quick/shifty
- hit some crazy off-the-backboard shots
- love that layup-fake-into-turnaround-hookshot
- gamble for the steal often
- played for celtics and lakers

If you look at Dennis' top plays, they all look like Rondo, just that Rondo has slightly more passing tricks up his sleeve!

(disregard the 2 lucky heaves. Why are those "top plays" anyway? they're just lucky!)
