have to admit I'm mildly surprised that Pierce didn't get one of those zones that Dirk has.  he had a lethal midrange game from the right corner of the FT line in particular

Dirk has him by over 5000 career points though.

not saying he doesn't but the grid shows Dirk from all over.  that's a lot of point distribution for a lot of spots.  goes to why I'm surprised PP didn't claim one or two of those spots himself.

Kirk Goldsbury is an absolute treasure. Glad he left the Spurs to keep working on stuff like this.

If you haven't seen it, his Naismith International Park is brilliant as well:

Wonder how much the graphic would change if stats weren't limited to the last 25 years. I assume the 3pt line would remain unchanged. Kareem would probably dominate the short corners with his unstoppable skyhook. Not sure whom to pick between Kareem and Wilt in the low post. Not sure whom to pick between Jordan and Dirk from the elbow. Not sure whom to pick between Jordan/Karl Malone/Dirk from mid range in general. Dirk's legendary one-legged fadeaway may be the 2nd most unstoppable move in basketball history. Timmy's bank shot should be up there as well, but Timmy was an all-around player rather than a scorer.

6 zones = Dirk
3 zones = Duncan, Steph, LeBron
2 zones = Shaq, Lillard, Harden
1 zone = Kobe, KG, R.Allen, T.Young, Ariza, J.Terry

My goodness, Dirk Nowitzki. Way to dominate.

You have to slide over to the right a bit to see it all. It’s actually:

6 zones = Dirk
4 zones = Ray, Steph
3 zones = Duncan, LeBron
2 zones = Shaq, Lillard, Harden
1 zone = Kobe, KG, T.Young, Ariza, J.Terry

The guys with 3 zones or more (Steph, Ray, Lebron, Dirk, TD) would make an absolutely ridiculous starting five.

Not only the 5 best shooters but they can each operate in their preferred areas while sharing the court. Duncan near the basket, Dirk in the midrange and high post, Ray in the corners and Steph closer to the middle, with Lebron handling the ball and penetrating.

what is this "near the basket" you speak of?

The 5 zones directly outside of what I assume is 0-3 feet (Lebron) are all occupied by either Shaq or Timmy.
