"Celtics' priority, according to league source, is to retain a "salary structure" that makes it possible to sign a "major" player when he comes available, most likely next summer. Good chance they don't use the $5.7 taxpayers mid-level this time around."

What other major player is available next year besides Bradley Beal?

None? RIP

Yeah this is really disheartening, and I’m usually an optimist regarding this team. We have two of the best young players in the league and here we go with another “bridge” year, waiting on the hope of a guy becoming available. It’s worked so well in past years…

You need to build around Tatum and Brown. A part of me really does wonder how much of this is to save Wyc money, disguised as a “long-term plan.” For example, there is no reason not to use the 5.7m MLE, except to save Wyc money.

Should be fun when Tatum requests a trade.

How about J. Brunson, Miles Bridges, Terry Rozier....  The team can split Beal's money up among two of those guys. The C's don't need a third superstar.  Two is enough if there is great quality around them.

Thank you!!

In fact I think they may even be better off without one.

I'm not convinced that throging 90% of your salary at three guys  (who all need the ball to be at their best) and then surrounding them with low cost scrubs, is the best way to build a team.

Celtics started a trend with their big 3, now every team since has tried to copy that formula to win - but people need to recognise that the Celtics big 3 worked not because of the outright talent of those 3 guys, but because of how well they complimented each other.  Pierce was the go-to scorer, and there was never any question about it.  KG was the defensive guy and energy guy but was also an elite offensive player.  Ray was the deadly shooter who stretched the floor and made teams pay if they tried to double those other guys.  And all three were older vets at their apex, ready and willing to sacrifice personal accolades for the aim of winning a title.  They were a perfect compliment - it just so happened they were also all stars.

Now days teams just focus on the star part, and totally ignore the "compliment" part.  The Bucks just won a title with one superstar, and not a single other star on the roster.  Middleton and Holiday are fringe All-Stars at best.  You dont need to have 3 superstars.

I have serious question marks around whether a team could actually excel with Beal, Tatum and Brown all on the same court.  Tatum and Brown are still young, trying to establish their individual careers.  They are unlikely to sacrifice for the good of the team.  Beal might, but the only thing he realy does at an elite level is score - so if you ask him to sacrifice that you are wasting him.  Best case maybe Brown takes less touches and plays more of a defensive / spot up shooter role - but doing that limits his growth.  Tatum's greatest gift is scoring, so like Beal you waste him if you take that away.

People don't realise it but I think if Beal does come here next year, Jaylen Brown's days as a Celtic will be numbered.  It'll only be a matter of time before management realises there is only one ball to go around, and one of those guys needs to be moved for a more "complimentary" piece - and given Tatum and Beal are good friends you KNOW that Jaylen is going to be the odd one out.  If getting Beal is the endgame then you may as well just trade Jaylen for him right now, because he clearly wants to be here so you dont really have to worry about him not re-signing.  Otherwise forget beal and just build around Tatum and Brown.

Addressing the 'Ownership is Cheap' complaint - NBA teams lost a lot of revenue over the past season and a half, so I can understand not wanting to pay luxury tax - when your team has no chance of contending.

And because of Danny's poor roster building, we're stuck with a group that, despite 2 really good players, doesn't have a whole lot of talent. At the end of last season the points were expected to come from the Jays, Kemba and Fornier.  2 of those guys are gone.
But even if Fornier had re-signed, this team was still looking at having a horrible bench with zero flexibility.

The roster needs serious re-tooling and that's not going to be accomplished in one season. Some here love the potential of PP, Nesmith and Langford. Only one of those 3 can score consistently and he tailed off big time the 2nd half of last season.

None of those 3 are going to win you playoff games. Then you have Grant Williams - who stinks yet is forced to play consistent minutes because they have no one better. And then you get to all the roster garbage that resulted from Ainge loading up on 2nd round picks he couldn't trade away - then he kept them around too long because cutting them would be admitting they were lousy picks.  And don't forget he saw fit to give Carsen Edwards guaranteed money.

Brad has to clear all that crap off the books and then try to find some under-the radar guys capable of exceeding the value of their (unfortunately cheap) contracts.

So you may have 2 stars, but the rest of your roster isn't much better than teams that were in the lottery.  And for now you have very little flexibility.

The only conclusion is the team getting quite a bit worse before it gets better.  Lets just hope Brad is up to the task at hand and the Jays are on board with it - otherwise this is a total rebuild in the not-too-distant future.

Not to mention, some of these star players became "stars" because of their team success. Guys like Draymond will not even sniff an All-Star appearance or even All-Defensive team if his team weren't contenders. Look at Siakam now after Kawhi left.

Agree about Beal...TP!  might be fun for a while....but I'm skeptical of big three concepts when there is no Kevin Garnett type player as one of them...doesn't need ball, anchor's and leads team such that selfishness impossible, etc ., and elite defender.  Brooklyn a bit of anomaly with the sheer level of talent...but even they struggled with defense...and we didn't see end result (I think they had it...Durant was unreal).  If the C's would prefer Beal to Brown, by all means follow up...but I'd keep Brown and add others..

Not so sure about that. Bench is probably headlined by Fournier and Horford, with Pritchard/Nesmith as rotation guards and Langford plus whoever they get as a big forward with the MLE or a TPE (in an alternate timeline where they're spending) available depending on matchups. There's a decent amount you can do with that group.

I agree, although I do wonder if we could pluck Mikal Bridges from Phoenix.  It’s going to be difficult for them to afford Paul and Booker while extending/resigning both Ayton and Bridges, and presumably Ayton is higher in the pecking order.

There is/was no path to contention this season, nor any FAs who could have joined this team and been a title team in a few years. But there is a path to clearing space to add a player of that caliber (or multiple lesser players, or trades) for next year. Why is this so hard to understand? Do y’all want a banner or to be… 5 wins better than last season? Which - btw - could still happen with a new coach, better defenders. Every smart team does this, including the Celtics in the past. Clear the books of well-paid mediocrity so you can make a splash when it counts.

Not so much the "big three" concept, but rather that we need a significant talent upgrade. Given what our team seems to be like in terms of attracting free agents, I'd rather try and lure one All-NBA calibre player than two or three good starters.

I also think, given we'll be taking on Milwaukee, Brooklyn, Philly, Miami and Atlanta, we need some high-end talent to keep up. If we go your route and one of the Jays goes down our season is basically toast!

You are right, but the team is greedy. They want to keep Brown when it is clear he should be moved for a more complimentary piece or pieces.

Great post, TP for you.  Some people seem to be freaking out over all this. Brad said he wants the team to be tougher, better on defense and more athletic. This is exactly what you do if you don’t have enough talent: Work on making the team better in other areas (while clearing cap space). Be the hardest working over-achieving team you can be.  THIS will attract top talent along with the Jays.

I liked the Dunn and Richardson pickups, both good defenders and cheap rotation players.  I like Fernando, Begarin and Nadar.  I would dump Edwards and Langford or maybe try to get some 2nd rounders for them.  I’ve soured on Grant Williams.  Not shedding a tear about Semi; nice kid and wish him well. The roster is getting close and I’m excited to see what Ume can do with this club.

This the Celtics phoning it in:

Pretty much agree with this. If we sign Beal, Jaylen will get traded for either a top big or top PG. TP for the post, Muzzy.

There is a looming problem with this strategy. The team comes out smoking and plays very well. Tatum has a breakout year and Brown does the same. They have a deep run in playoffs only to fall short. The Jays are frustrated because management did not believe in them. Other scenario is team plays poorly, and Jays are frustrated because management did not give them enough support.
