This is a rumor shared on the Dan Le Batard show:

Quote
A very high-ranking official with the Nets who had a lot to do with the money said basically, there’s a blank check as soon as these guys got here – whether that’s buying a girlfriend or a girlfriend on the side a house in California for a week, whether that’s just putting up money for the boys and the homeboys and equipment for random s***, they’re totally cool with that.

Just renting a house on the team dime. These guys don’t pay for a lot of personal stuff themselves. And so, the financial team of the Nets would kind of come every week or so, they’d be like, “OK, we thought we had this under control. We’ve got to redo the budgets every week.” And they were like it was just a new thing every [dang] time.

There’s a lot of things that the Nets do that aren’t kosher. There’s a reason they have this kind of kremlin-esque wall around everything they do. During the middle of COVID, they were working out half the team – well, really, Kyrie, KD and their friends on the team – out in Kobe’s old gym in California. You weren’t allowed to do that during COVID.

They were running a secret camp the whole time, trying to get Kyrie and KD in shape.

Wouldn’t this be wildly against the cap rules?  Is Adam Silver going to investigate?  My guess is, we will see discipline for this as soon as we see discipline for the ref who kept Devin Booker from fouling out in Game 4.  Maybe they can hire the same firm to do the investigation that the Blazers did regarding Chauncey Billups.

I do think there will be an investigation.  The Bucks lost Bogdonovich and draft picks last summer for their attempts at circumventing.  Depends how blatant this was, but at a minimum there are 20-something teams that would like more of that Brooklyn Net luxury tax bill.

The NBA won’t even talk about doing an investigation until the bigger news networks start running the story.   The most egregious of you ask me is the COVID protocol violations.

This is at the administrative level, unless they're all doing it, owners don't seem like they like to cover for each other... they'll push for an investigation if it smells that funny.

I think the big market teams are doing this sort of thing regularly now. Heard a Raptors beat writer saying on the radio a couple years back that the Clips were at least loosely affiliated with a bunch of business deals that were granted to Kawhi's crew.

LeBron and AD going to the Lakers feels fishy too. Like many non-basketball arrangements were set up in advance, and were predicated on their going to LA and only to LA.

Not surprised about any of this.

I think the individual owners are afraid of the league office though. The office that controls officials and may or may not be able to rig the draft. The problem too is that if an owner complains too much about corruption there is the chance it could torpedo the whole league and decimate the value of their own franchise.

IMO much like a criminal organization the silence is earned by the prospect of everyone going down at once.

Why am I not surprised that the NBA allows teams to pay for players' prostitutes?
