I wonder if Ricky Rubio wants to have the chance to compete for a championship? He is on an expiring contract this year and is on the opposite side of 30. One would think given where Minnesota is they might not be inclined to extend him.

They are also thin at the center position and perhaps Tristan Thompson might be a valuable piece going back to them.

I would love to see Rubio on the C's but at a glance the salaries for a Rubio/Thompson swap don't work.

edit: at a second glance, they might work. Was looking at the just-concluded year, not next year's squad. Unfortunately I don't have time to actually verify the numbers at the moment, so I'll stick with with a strong, settled "it's possible. maybe."

We’d likely have to include a young piece or combination of pieces with Thompson.

Langford + Thompson works (not sure I’d support that trade however)

But this would also work:

Thompson + Grant Williams

It is that simple.

He would be someone who might be great here, but he had an awful year last year, and given his general inefficiency as a scorer, he can't afford a drop like that. So, he's worth a try, but the team needs an exit plan with him because it might not work. He's just not a sure thing.

With the Celtic bench being so thin, I'm suspect of any 2 for 1 trade.

However acquiring Rubio would send Smart to the bench, and I'm all for that. IMO Marcus is best off the bench. Rubio has a good BBIQ, he's a vet and the C's need both.

He is on an expiring contract. Sounds like an exit plan to me (if we want it).

Rubio can't shoot. We need guys who can shoot.

It is that simple.

Getting a point guard without holes in their game isn't going to be easy. He is a really good defender, and a elite passer. He'll also give you more movement, pace and quality judgement than Smart.

It really boils down to whether he still can be the guy he was in Phoenix the year before last, or the guy he was last year, who can't shoot well enough to play.

I’d probably target T.J. McConnell first.  They have similar strengths and weaknesses, but McConnell would be cheaper.

Yeah picking up a guy for just the taxpayer MLE like McConnell or even a guy like Ish Smith, guys that can pick up the pace when needed, works for. I would probably hedge toward Ish since his most recent past two years has him shooting threes better than Smart, Rubio or McConnell.

I like McConnell because his defense is quite good and he’s a great passer.  But Ish could work.

Patty Mills is out there, and George Hill will be once he’s waived.

There are a lot of really strong options that shouldn’t break the bank.

But those guys shouldn't be starters, while Rubio could be.  I think the point was to get someone good enough to relegate Smart to the bench.
