Pump the brakes. He has not become “really good”.  His numbers are marginally better than Payton Pritchard’s, and he’s got the same issues of size when it comes to defence. He’s a good bench PG, which is something we don’t need.
Box stats: 17.3 points per 75, 8.7 shots created per 100 (93rd percentile), 42.8% offensive load (87th percentile), +3% rTS (link to box creation and offensive load: https://craftednba.com/players/cameron-payne)

Non-box stats: 89th percentile in EPM (89th offensive, 76th defensive, 78th in eW), +4.4 RAPTOR (+3.2 offensive, +1.2 defensive, +4.9 WAR)

Looks like a very nice point guard to me

Payne is like another Ish Smith type player.

Would love a guy like that as the backup, but wouldn't invest in him as a starter.  I don't think it makes sense for the Celts to focus their limited resources on a backup guard.  Definitely would be nice to have but it's not a priority, especially since Pritchard looked decent in his rookie season and is on a cheap deal.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

He's put up very strong stats for a backup PG, and looking at his work filling in for CP3 this playoffs I wonder if he can be a decent starting PG on a high-level team.

I would say the same about Marcus Smart. That he is not starter PG worthy. More of a back up, 6th man.  He became starter by default.
