The Wizards are about to get swept, or maybe lose in 5.  They have no obvious way to improve significantly anytime soon.

The Celtics are also about to get swept, or maybe lose in 5.  They've got Tatum and Brown, but no real third star now that Kemba isn't at that level anymore.  The Celts have no obvious way to add that third star.  Even if they want to clear cap space to be a player in the free agency market next summer, that would require making some pretty significant roster sacrifices in the short and medium term, not to mention finding a team to take Kemba's deal.  So that seems unlikely.

We know Bradley Beal and Tatum are friends.  Beal got a strong reminder of how great his friend is when Tatum dropped 50 on the Wiz in the play-in game.

Beal has just one guaranteed year left on his current deal after this one, then he has a player option which he is unlikely to pick up.

So, tell me why this won't happen:

- Beal informs the Wizards that he plans to opt out next summer and that he won't be re-signing with the Wizards.  He also informs the Wizards that he wants to be traded to the Boston Celtics.

- Beal makes clear through back channels or whatever players use to get this out there, that he has a short list of teams with which he would consider re-signing, with Boston at the top of the list.

The Celtics offer:

Kemba Walker + [any young player the Wizards want] + at least 4 first round picks / pick swaps over the next 5 years.

The Celtics also offer to take on Bertans (who has several years left and looks like an overpay) by adding Tristan Thompson (expiring) to the deal, plus a couple filler salaries such as Romeo Langford and Grant Williams.

The Wizards reluctantly accept, as this is the best offer they get given Beal's demands.

The Celtics mortgage their future on a trio of Beal, Brown, and Tatum.  They have assurances from Beal's camp that he intends to sign a 3+1 deal with the team in 2022 (which would line his contract up with Tatum).  They believe those assurances despite times in the past when they thought other players intended to re-sign and didn't.

To be clear, I don't think this scenario is likely, but it's the only one I can think of right now that results in the Celtics being significantly better next season roster-wise than they were this year.

Tell me why this won't (or can't) happen.  Maybe I'm missing something really obvious that would prevent this from even working at all.  The most obvious reasons this won't happen I can think of are that (1) Beal would not actually have Boston at or near the top of his trade list or that (2) the Wizards would get a better offer from some other team that is willing to gamble on Beal staying with them.

Anyway, throw some cold water on me.

It is a reasonable offer given what other stars have been traded for and is absolutely worth doing, but unless Tatum really gets up into the top 5 player discussion, that team isn't going to contend for a title.  But if Tatum does, that trade would set the team up to actually compete a lot more than the current roster does.  It would absolutely be mortgaging the future though giving up Nesmith, Langford, and basically all future 1st's.  Again you have to do it, but how good the team is, is contingent almost solely on Tatum reaching his full potential

It is a definite possibility.  Like Moranis said, the Wiz probably want Nesmith and Langford as well.

I think we need to keep Timelord though.

The question is if we trade Brown in this scenario. Having three ball-dominant wings is not ideal. Brown's ceiling is high enough to net us another star.

Would we move him for a stud ball distributor or a big to pair with Rob?

Won't happen at that price. Danny will low ball them say, Kemba, one 1st and Edwards/Grant. They would turn it down. Beal will go to another team for a better package deal.

There are several reasons that Boston won't be at the top of his list.  Most notably, depending on how Kyrie is viewed by other players around the league, the reputation of the city can cause Boston to become a less desirable destination.  Also, everyone wants to go to LA or Miami, so (call me a skeptic) when someone demands out of their current situation, I believe it is to go to one of those two places.  After all, it is not enough to have Lebron and AD - the Lakers need more guys... :o

I agree with Moranis.  I don't think Beal, Brown and Tatum are enough to compete with Brooklyn, and may not be good enough to beat Milwaukee or Philly either.  However, if we can bring in some mid level players playing above their contracts, it can give us a puncher's chance.

The one thing I don't understand is I think Beal is fantastic, but he has never won anything and has not gone far in the postseason.  This is different than getting KG, who carried a weak T-Wolves team to the western conference finals.  Is Beal the type of guy that can take us over the top and for whom we should trade away all our assets (other than Brown and Tatum) to acquire?

Beal isn't a franchise player.  He is a very good #2 secondary star type player.  That is why how good Boston is is almost entirely contingent on Tatum (that is whether Beal is here or not).  Tatum has a real chance to be a franchise player, if he gets to that level then Boston would have a real shot at competing for championships if the supporting cast is good enough(I think Brown and Beal would be good enough).  So that is why you would do the trade, but Tatum has to become THE GUY.

I don't really see any other options apart from Beal for actually improving the core group we have.  Even if Tatum, Brown, Beal isn't winning you a title, that probably does put you in the conversation, at least. Tatum, Brown, and Kemba doesn't.

Posted a thread about this earlier in the year. I agree, Makes a lot of  sense. Just have to hope Tatum convinces Beal to ask for a move to Boston.

I think Danny is waiting to make a move for Bradley Beal. Unlikely to happen this year, since Washington’s asking price is going to be too high, but in the off-season, when Beal will be in the final year of his contract with a player option for the next. If a trade is made in the off-season, Kemba would need to be involved with multiple first round picks/swap options and young players such as Pritchard, Langford, Nesmith.

It’s clear that the C’s are not good enough with Kemba as the 3rd “star” and he’s turning 31 in a few months, so his age is not in-line with with Jayson and Jaylen. Beal however, is still only 27, so he would have 4-5 prime years left.

I don’t think a core of Brown, Tatum, and Beal is good enough to get past the Nets next year, however, the year after could be the C’s time. KD will be turning 35, Harden will be 34 and Kyrie will be 31. At that point Brown will be 27, Tatum will be 26, and Beal will be 30. That is the time When the C’s big 3 would likely be able to overtake the Nets. Boston could very well have the best trio of stars in the NBA as well.

I think Beal would be interested in coming to Boston to team up with Tatum, since they have a very close friendship. Ive heard Beal and Tatum talk about one another in postgame interviews and I can’t imagine that these two have not discussed playing together. With Tatum being tied up through 2024/2025 season, Beal to Boston might be their only opportunity to do so. If Bradley wants to be in Boston, he just needs to follow AD and Hardens lead. At the end of the day these star players that have 1 or 2 years left on their contract are going to get to whatever team they want to. Just have to hope that the destination where Beal wants to be is Boston.

Why do people think teams are going to give up 3-4 firsts, plus draft pick swap options, plus several young players for a guy that is a potential 1 year rental? No team is going to give up that much for Beal. Did you forget the trade the C’s made for Kyrie? Players to match salaries and a 1st round pick and Irving was under contract for multiple years. Let’s be a little realistic.

Are the Celtics good enough to go all the way with a core of Tatum/Beal/Brown?

I love the pairings but I fear there may not be enough playmaking. The need for a true off ball, ball moving 1 and 5 would be apparent.

One thing is for certain, the scoring and versatility of those 3 would be fun to watch.

Yes, but James Harden and Anthony Davis are a step up from Beal, and while maybe one could argue Paul George is closer to Beal’s level, he had an extra year left on his deal.  Further, Beal’s contract is not eligible for an extend-and-trade.

Those trades also didn't involve a very large multi-year contract going to the trading team.  Walker has negative value to the Wizards (not negative overall, but to the Wizards he does).  If Boston could find a 3rd team to take Walker without salary going to the Wizards, I don't think it would take that many picks to get it done.  So, like if NY absorbed Kemba and sent Knox or a 1st to Washington, I think Boston could get away with just a couple of 1st's (21 and 23) and probably no pick swaps.

For players with multiple years on their contract. Not 1 year rentals. Kawhi, who is much better than Beal was traded for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and the Raptors' 1st round pick for that year.
