Duane Rankin: #Lakers injury report tonight at #Suns for Game 2. LeBron James (right ankle sprain) and Anthony Davis (right shoulder sprain) PROBABLE.

How is Lebron’s shoulder injury not on the report? You know, from that play where he and CP3 were going for a rebound and Chris had his arm briefly and then let go and then James proceeded to jump/fall onto the ground writhing in pain.... ::)

Pathetic...

The NBA is the only level of basketball where the individuals are more important than collective talent. It grabs casual eyes, but at the cost of most of its credibility.

Devil's advocate -- in the last decade, we have seen more Finals results where the best collection of talent wins despite not having the most talented individual player in the series.

2011 - Mavericks
2014 - Spurs
2015 - Warriors
2017 - Warriors
2018 - Warriors
2019 - Raptors*

*Two arguments - Durant technically played in that series and is better than Kawhi; also, there's an argument to be made that Curry is better than Kawhi, though Kawhi certainly outplayed him in that series.

Of course, in all cases except for the Mavs we're talking about teams with several All-Star caliber players and at least one MVP caliber player.

You forgot 2016 Cavs? When they had the Big 3 of LeBron, Irving, and Love.

The Cavs had LeBron in that series, so they had the best player in the series and won.

also a bit strange to include the Warriors, especially the Durant Warriors.  I mean sure Lebron was probably the best player in those series, but it isn't like the gap between him and Curry or Durant was that large as they were both top 5 players themselves.  And Kawhi was clearly the best player in the Raptors/Warriors series (no one was claiming Curry was the best player in the world like they were of Kawhi).

Kawhi has never won MVP, Curry has won multiple.  Really though the main reason I think 2019 is a valid example is that the Warriors should have / would have beaten the Raptors if not for injuries.  Point being that injuries can be a major equalizer that allows less talented teams to win.

As for the rest, are you seriously, now, trying to argue that LeBron wasn't the clear cut best / most talented player in every series his teams played against the Warriors?

I'm certain that wasn't the case at the time.

Anyway, this is all a bit pedantic, my point is just that we see "collections of talent" beat "individual talent" all the time, it's just that those "collections of talent" invariably include several All-NBA caliber players.

You can definitely win a series if you don't have the best player, but you probably need the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best player in that series.
I had Durant as better than him for most of that run and would have continued last year and this year but for Durant's injuries.  I'm sure you can find that in my posts on here.  Starting in 18 through the 20 season, I've been pretty firm that when healthy that the top 4 players in the world have been Giannis, Durant, Lebron, and Curry in that order.  Curry has taken a step back obviously and Durant and James are very close again just given Durant hasn't been very healthy, but I still have Giannis as the best player in the world.  Hopefully the Bucks actually win so Giannis can get his just due.

My bigger point, however, was that if Lebron was better than Durant, the difference was pretty small such that including that for the position you were taking is just strange.  There wasn't some mega gap making it an upset.  There is after all a reason the Warriors were in fact heavy favorites over the Cavs in both the Durant series.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

They were heavy favorites because they had an (overwhelmingly) greater collection of talent.

If it had simply been Durant vs LeBron, I think most people would have seen the Warriors as underdogs, even if Durant was close to LeBron at that point in time (remember that LeBron spanked Durant's team in the Finals just a few years prior).

This was directly in response to the point the poster made about how the NBA is the only basketball league in which you see individual talents making a bigger difference than the collection of talent on a team.

I'm just pointing out that at least over the last decade, the team that wins the title has often not had the #1 player / talent in the championship series.  Still, most of those title winners have had several All-NBA / All-Defense players, so it's not like they were scrappy underdogs or anything.

As I said ... it's not true that in the NBA that the team with the best player always wins.  Often we see the team with the 2nd, 3rd, and perhaps 4th best player beat the team with the best player.

But it is almost always the case that the more talented team wins, and hardly anybody wins a title unless they've got several All-Star caliber players.

Our playoff series is so lopsided...its a freakin massacre.

I was really one of those who advocated to lose the play in and just get a highr draft pick.

But many still thought maybe there is a chance....the only way we even have a 1 % chance is if KD gets injured..

The Thunder/Heat series was 5 years earlier.  That is a long time and in that time Lebron got worse and Durant got a lot better.  Durant and James were seen as near equals during those series, with many proclaiming Durant as the better player.  This idea that you seem to be making that the margin wasn't razor thin, just isn't the reality of the situation.  Couple that with another top 5 player in the world and the guy that had won the most recent MVP (well two most recent MVP's) and it was no contest.  It is just a poor example of the point you were making.  That said, the team with the best player loses playoff series all the time.  We saw it 3 times in the playoffs last year alone (Philly losing to Boston, Milwaukee losing to Miami, Los Angeles losing to Denver).  It isn't uncommon at all because you do need a good enough team.  What you almost never see though is a team without a top 5 player winning a title and it isn't exactly common for those teams to even make the finals (it isn't rare, but prior to Miami the last time it happened was the Spurs in 14).

That's got to be a flagrant 2 on AD, right? If Smart gets thrown out for that hit a month or so ago, how is that not a flagrant 2 and ejectable? Of course they won't though because it's AD.

Didn't Draymond get ejected and suspended a game for way less than that in the finals?

The NBA will explain why The rules don't apply to The Lakers once again!

Looks like the Suns-Lakers series will be a low-scoring one.
