The guy's been sitting out for 2 weeks. And he's known to sit out for stretches during much of his tenure with the Celtics.

Sore knees for a couple of weeks? It also seems like he's had a lot of leg, hips, and back injuries. What's the deal.

He’s a long-term injury waiting to happen.

But seriously, he has a hip issue and when he was coming into the league dropped to #27 because he was (and remains) an injury risk. He has a circulation issue in his lower body and is always going to be susceptible to injuries both minor and major as a result.

I'm only vaguely familiar with his history, but have been under the impression that's part the reason why he's always played limited minutes too?

Injury-prone, maybe been trying to create him the right habits and/or muscles to not get injured?

Or, to speculate even more wildly; maybe he's hurt more than we're letting through, but we wanna trade him for that reason?

(I'd love him to be the future of the franchise at his position, but if his longevity is an issue, well, the best ability is availability.)

.edit: Jiri beat me to it with a more informed response :D

If it's a matter of pain management I'm not overly concerned. Still concerned, but not incredibly.

Am wary of it growing into something more serious though
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

The bone edema in the hip is usually associated with osteoarthritis and can be degenerative and affect the legs farther down in time.

It's very rare in someone of Robert's age.

It can be very, very painful and for someone as active as Timelord, needs to be managed.

I don't pretend to know anything in Williams's case. The team has been pretty mum on the subject. But, Stevens saying they were managing Timelord so that he can give them more in the playoffs, seems to me to say, it's something he will probably be dealing with for possibly his career.

Now, I could be completely wrong here and his hip is fine and he just has a knee issue not related to the hip, but he missed a game in February over hip pain and the knee issue is on the same side as the hip problem, soooooo.....

I suspect you right about all the above.   This why I ve been hoping assets will be used to acquire another fellow ,  if he can’t be healthy at this age  ,  it will only get worse .  or he is used in such small amounts it makes it Impossible to have a steady positive effect on the team.

We miss him badly on the court.   I thought this was over knee soreness?

Not the biggest Timelord fan. I have a hard time hitching my wagon to someone who just can’t stay healthy. Cs need to look for alternative options in the summer. Timelord ain’t gonna cut it.

We all hope it’s just the knee itself is irritated from a bump or over stress,  normal ruff play.. but as others have pointed out it could be a chronic symptom of other leg , hip or born with conditions he has no control over that may surface more frequently as time passes.  These big fellows seem to be born with more than their fair share of defects .

This is probably the reason why his minutes had been managed by Brad, despite the fanbase crying out for more Timelord. But with Theis's trade Brad had to play him more and he's broken down.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I've been a broken record about this, but I just don't understand why we traded Theis when we didn't have to. We were under the tax after the Teague/Javonte trade(s); there was just no reason to trade Theis, especially since we didn't get any picks or playable players in return.

I've been downvoted to oblivion on another site for bringing this up, so perhaps I am the only one that feels this way. The rebuttals: we wanted to open up more playing time for TL (we can see how well that is going) and we weren't going to re-sign Theis in the offseason (Kornet/Wagner are also expiring...and much worse players). I also realize we were able to sign Parker by cutting Wagner; but we would have had an open roster spot if we just kept Theis. The tax would have been extremely close, but who cares if we needed to wait a week or two before signing him?

I am hoping for the best for Rob and can't wait for his return. He clearly is the highest ceiling big on the team w/ or w/o Theis. But, it is a little frustrating counting on Grant for big minutes at the center position because Kornet is essentially unplayable against most teams. Get better soon, Rob - we need you!

One thing that probably bears mentioning, is that it looks as if Jaylen Brown has to be paid a $1.3 million incentive bonus for making the All-Star team. That bonus isn't included in all of the salary cap figures you see on the internet. That might explain dealing Theis for cap space.

Nick is right here about JB's likely bonus.  Plus Evan has a bonus clause and depending on how far we go in the playoffs, JB could earn some of his "unlikely bonuses" - Mike Zarren had to account for all of that to stay under the tax.

I am hoping D Theis may be willing to come back this summer for a 3 year taxpayer MLE of 6 million.

Daniel Theis is not walking through that door.

Also, I posted a bit about this in a Jabari Parker thread, but because Evan's bonus is based in part on games played, he's no longer getting that bonus, although at the time of the trade it wasn't a given.

Yep. I think we were 8-1 with him starting and 3-4 with him out since the trade deadline.
