Something perplexes me about Gordon Hayward's offseason and I thought I would see if anyone agrees.

If you didn't already know, Hayward is represented by Mark Bartelstein, the same agent as Giannis Antetokounmpo. This previous offseason most teams were either clearing cap space or consolidating cap space to have a chance at signing Giannis. Given Bartelstein would have known that Giannis intended to sign the super max, thus most of the league would have huge chunks of cap space available and with no star player to fill it...why not advise Hayward to wait till next offseason to either leave the Celtics or sign a max deal?

I know most on here bash Ainge for allowing stars to leave, but this is a situation where Hayward has to take ownership. Hayward although tragically injured, was given everything not to feel forgotten or discouraged by Celtics coaching and front office staff. In Hayward's entire Celtics tenure, he earned 90,670,095 and started a grand total of 73 games (playoffs included), that is roughly 1.24 million per start. If you are Hayward don't you owe it to the Celtics fans to see out your contract and give them 1 healthy season? This offseason he would have been offered a plethora of max deals because of the scarce level of talent available in free agency, given Miami were one of his previous suiters, a starting five of Adebayo, Hayward, Butler, Herro & Dragic is a title contender and can move on without abandoning the Celtics.

Should a guy with chronic injury issues:

a) take $120 million guaranteed; or

b) risk further injury?

Your advice would have been “bet on your fragile body”?

Would’ve been nice if he stuck around.

Him leaving is as much an indictment of Brad as anything else.  That was  a shocking inability to keep a player here.

If The Celtics wanted him back at that contract I'm sure they could've had him. I believe the parting was mutual.

It would be nice & all but he didn't owe us anything.

Take the money. Especially given the risks involved particularly with him here.

At the end of the day, you have to do what's best for yourself and family & not necessarily the fans.

should CBS had played him as the main star, ahead of jaylen and jason? because that is what hayward wanted his role to be.

how you link this directly to Stevens is not clear at all, do you have any links or info that directly states as much? if so, then please post them.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

He made the decision that was right for him, that doesn't mean it was the decision that was right for fans.

Fans don't owe him our kind understanding anymore than he's owe us a "healthy year".  His leaving screwed the team and fans have right to feel screwed.

I didn't say that fans shouldn't be upset.  Just pointing out the other perspective here that seems to be lost on fans at times who expect loyalty.

None at all. What does he owe us, given it seems we offered him a contract below his market value. I can’t fault someone for setting up their family with generational wealth. Given the way his Celtic career unfolded why would he have stayed?

I was referring to the ‘treated like livestock’ part.

To the OP, sorry but I don’t agree. Doesn’t matter that teams have a ton of cap space. I don’t think GH is a max player anymore. He didn’t even make the all star team this year despite being the man on that Hornets roster (how do you think he would’ve fared playing for us, sharing the court with the Jays, Walker and smart?)

30m/4 years was a way higher number than most of us saw him making, let alone the max at about 35-36. I’m convinced he made a great decision (our fandom aside)

After seeing what happened to IT after he literally broke his hip for them and his reward was not to get the max contract he thought was his due but rather getting shipped out as damaged goods in the Kyrie trade, I can’t blame a player for taking the money and a bigger role at another team as icing on the cake.
