Looks like we have a solid 3rd string center.

That’s about right. His irrational confidence in his offense reminds me of Smart.

I like his potential. Not sure what he can be, but CBS has gotten a lot out of players like Olynyk, Sullinger, Zeller, Horford, Johnson, and Theis. I think Wagner could be developed, and the raw tools look like they are there.

It'd be pretty cool to lock him into a smaller long-term contract -- something like Zubac's or Bryant's contract.

Well, this offseason the most we can offer him is a one-year deal for $3.89 million, so no long-term deal until 2022 if he works out.

Irrational confidence reminds me of Delonte West and Nate Robinson -- some of my favorite past Celtics.

  • Hustle like Cowens or have a seat
Mo Swagner i.e. "Swags" was pretty good last night. I liked DT but I think this kid with his attitude is what the team needed at the moment IMO. "Swags" jumped right into the offence, prob a little nervous but did fine for his debut. Bigger, 5 yrs younger than DT and seems quicker too. I think he understands his limitations and that his hustle gives him a better chance to stay in the league. Pretty good pickup. IMO

Can Washington offer him more than that to bring him back ? I thought that limitation stays with the team that declined his rookie option?

I’m not completely sure if Washington can offer him more than his rookie scale extension, because I’m not a labor attorney trained in reading such contracts.  That said, I’m sure we can’t.  From the CBA:

Quote
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this Agreement, if a player is a Veteran Free Agent following the second or third Season of his Rookie Scale Contract (where the first Option Year or second Option Year (as applicable) to extend such Contract was not exercised), then any new Player Contract between the player and the Team that signed him to his Rookie Scale Contract (and/or, if such Contract was subsequently assigned, any such assignee Team) may provide for Regular Salary, Likely Bonuses and Unlikely Bonuses in the first Salary Cap Year of up to the Regular Salary, Likely Bonuses and Unlikely Bonuses, respectively, that the player would have received for such Salary Cap Year had his first or second Option Year (as applicable) been exercised. Annual increases and decreases in Salary and Unlikely Bonuses shall be governed by Section 5(c)(2) above.

That said, the above language implies that we could offer him a multi-year deal, starting at his declined option year value, so I was probably wrong about my no long-term deal statement earlier.

I liked what I saw.  A bit rough around the edges but he moved well and seemed to have pretty high court vision, awareness.  He is no replacement for Theis but I don't look at it that way.  To me, we swapped Fournier for Theis.  We got Wagner for Teague and Kormet for Green.  Much rather have a young big over an aging PG.

Nbadraft.net - Moritz Wagner

Comparison: Kelly Olynyk
Strengths: A protoypical pick-and-pop big man, Wagner has a great combination of size and skill … Shot 39% from 3 his last year at UM, a great number for a 6’11" guy … Crafty scorer who can get open looks and get creative both around the rim and on the perimeter … Faceup 4 with decent handles and a really good first step at 6’11"… Runs the floor well in transition, creating a lot of opportunities at the rim in those situations … Efficient player who shot 53% or better each year of college … Patient inside with a variety of post moves … Quick hands that allow him to strip the ball when playing help defense … Good feel for the game, provides leadership and instinctiveness on the floor … Shows a lot of determination … Not a great athlete but has shown the ability to hold his own when isolated on the perimeter against Big Ten guards … Good hands and pick-and-pop threat make him ideal pick-and-roll big … Deadly spin move when finishing at the rim …

Weaknesses: What may have worked with his faceup game in college will likely be much more easily neutralized in the pros as defenders are quicker and longer … Not a great rim protector and not really athletic or quick enough to defend the 4 either … May be neutralized to merely a stretch big at the next level … Average rebounder for a 6’11" guy … Does not project to offer a lot of versatility at the next level besides being a big guy who can shoot and occasionally score inside … For a 40% 3point shooter, he surprisingly struggles from the FT line at below 70% …

Overall: Wagner has upside as a deadly shooter with great size and a developing faceup game, but against quicker, more athletic competition, he may struggle to get looks both inside and out or offer much outside of shooting…

Notes: Measured: 6′ 10.5” barefoot,  6′ 11.5” in shoes, 241.4 lbs, 7′ 0” wingspan,  9′ 0” standing reach, 6.75% body fat,  9.00 inch hand length at the 2018 NBA Draft Combine …

That had me hooked, just a beautiful shot. And then his reverse in the paint ambitious and confident  it didn't have to go in.
He landed in basketball heaven .A collection of hard working young stars and Marcus Smart, the Auerbach Center.A great organization, coaching all those flags and hall of Famers .A young city and sports mecca
The kid had some high scoring games as a pro to go with that motor.

Having watched his Wiz and Michigan videos.

He plays the game like a football player in certain ways. Underneath he looks for contact. He likes to elevate "through the paint" for layups. I'm sure opposing bigs will get tired of his hammering.

His handle is really good for a 6'11" guy.

He does let his emotions get ahead of him fairly often.

He goes at a fast pace.

An example...his passes are laser beams....ouch!

I think the sparkplug label off the bench fits. Mo won't be caught "watching the game" whilst on the court.

The team doesn't have a screamer...but now they do.

I will say, he flies around, but, he ain't no ballerina.

For instance Robert "flies around" but his movements are very accurate and well timed.

Mo is more of a lumberjack.

He has a decent amount of NHL defenseman in him. Clearing out the crease in front of the goaltender.

Instant fan favorite.
