I amongst most fans have despised the level of NBA players constantly complaining to the refs about minor calls and star players like Trae Young, Luka Doncic, Chris Paul and LeBron ect. attempting to pressure the refs to gain favourable calls and cheap free throws. The league has catered for attacking, smaller players like never before in NBA history yet we are getting unprecedented levels of complaining.
The NBA needs to look at the major soccer leagues like EPL how to stamp out; flopping, complaining, ref influence and time wasting. I know you must think soccer, are you kidding? No actually because these are all things that have been major issues in soccer but the EPL uses methods to attempt to counter them.
- The ref usually only wants to talk to the captain (at most) if a team is creating issues, as a warning that cards will be coming out.
- If the ref is surrounded by players he will walk away and actually yell at them to go away.
- If the same player is in his ear he will give out a card as a warning to others.
- Time wasting is a card-able offence to maintain the pace at the end of the game
- Players who dive (flop) and have a reputation are rarely given the benefit of the doubt and are actually told to get up or if it's clear dive, given a card.
- There is a sensor in the soccer ball and goal line that feeds into the refs watch, this helps the officials gauge if the ball is over the line, perhaps it could be use for out of bounds calls, 3 or 2 point shots ect. to speed up reviewing process.
I am certain if the NBA took on these measures and extrapolated them for basketball, the game would improve.
