Not trading Smart for a player of Markkanen's caliber, no matter how much I'd like to see the Celts find a true pick and pop threat to play off J&J.
Also this trade would mean giving up two solid rotation players to add one solid rotation player at a position where the Celts already have too many players.
The Celts need to add MORE quality rotation players.
Rotation players aren't going to elevate Boston into contender status, whereas someone like Markkanen could in a season or two. You fill out the rotation once you have a good enough core. Boston doesn't have a good enough core.
I don't see Markkanen as that kind of player.
That is fair, I just disagree. I think he could be an incredible offensive player and he has plenty of room to grow defensively as well. He isn't there yet of course, but I don't think Tatum is where he needs to be yet either.
