Rockets could only offer him 2 years. He wants more.

The Rockets can offer Dipo up to five years in the off-season. They were simply trying to wrap him up before he hits free agency and they can lose him.

I think Oladipo wants to end up in Miami next year.

I agree..be interesting to see if Miami trades for him now & Houston don’t want to lose him and get nothing in return

I’d trade for him.  He’d be a fantastic fit here.

I would also

but realistically it will take  a hefty trade offer

"hefty" only in terms of matching salary, not talent.  a probable, half-season rental of a guy still not fully back to his all-star form pre-injury will not cost much in terms of valuable assets.  what would make it hefty for us is that to match salaries, we'd likely have to send out Smart which is a price I wouldn't pay for Dipo

the other option is the TPE but he's not the caliber of player I want Danny to use that on.  If he uses it, it should be for that legit 3rd allstar.

maybe

Rockets have not looked good

there are rumors of a firesale - players like Tucker, House, Gordon possibly traded

If that happens would Oladipo or Wall want to stay for a rebuild?

Oh they might trade him, but him turning down the extension is a non-story because he was never going to accept only 2 years at 22.5 million a year at this point.  I'd be really surprised if doesn't get at least get 4 years, 100 million (and I'd it expect it to be more money than that).

Anybody else think that the extension rule in the NBA is terrible? Oladipo will be an UFA when the season concludes in a couple of months where HOU will be able to offer him a 5yr max contract; however, right now, they can only offer him a 2yr/$45M contract. It's the exact same reason we lost Kyrie for nothing. The extension amount we were able to offer wasn't even close to being acceptable so we had to take our chances in trying in the offseason.

If a player like Oladipo or Kyrie could actually decline a 5yr max (or near max) offer from their current team before hitting UFA, the team would know that they weren't serious about staying and would be able to trade him. I know the CBA has their reasoning for these types of rules, but if a team is going to be able to sign a player to a certain contract after the season, why can't they just agree to terms in that last year?

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

can't reward a team .... to try to cheat their way onto an easy 4 year deal

Thats the only thing I can think of

If they go to market,  other teams have a chance to entice/sign them
