What would the NBA look like if they only counted your stats in games you won and just threw out the stats in games you lost? I'd like to see it. I bet players would play a more team oriented game. Ah well, just a thought....

Can you tell who has insomnia?

It would definitely be a better, more team oriented game.  Especially if they didn't count stats at all!  There would be huge changes in the way a lot of guys play the game.

I would think that you would see top guys less willing to stay with small market teams, or more likely to create superteams

Or, more likely, people would still track all the stats in losses and it would have no actual effect. At this point, it's too easy to track/generate stats for this to really work.
I'm bitter.

So rebuilding teams, young teams, etc. don't matter.

Or more likely you see teams up 40 keeping their stars in to stat hunt.

Or you get someone leading the league with 10 games of stats.

Or countless other strange results.

Just a terrible idea
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

If I were a player and wanted to be the scoring champ, I’d go to a terrible team and try to put up 60 every night, like in Kobe’s final game.  We’d win a few games, and I’d have the scoring title.

Doesn't creating a superteam run the risk of losing out on stats to your superstar teammates, though?

Obviously it wouldn't actually work and could never happen but I think it's a fun idea by the OP.

The exact execution of the idea may be dumb but the general concept is pretty fascinating... how would guys play if there were no stats at all, if winning games was the only thing that mattered, the only thing that fans cared about, the only thing that players got their egos from, and the only thing that owners paid money for, the only thing that got players endorsement deals?  It sounds far fetched nowadays but if you listen to old Red Auerbach soundbites, it seems like it was a lot closer to that back in the 50's.

I don’t know if it would change the outcome. Empty stat guys will still rather put up monster stats for 30 games than mediocre stats for 50. And we all still have eyes. Fans and teams will still see a guy can score 30 every night or grab 15 boards or whatever.

Interesting idea. In baseball don’t they measure batting average and then slugging average as a subset of batting average. There should be a way to weight stats in wins vs stats in losses. Don’t know exactly how, but this should be done.

Yeah, it wasn't well thought out but there's a germ of an idea there.  ;D I also like to see them widen those side lines on the court. Guys are stepping out of bounds a dozen times a game.

But you get all zeros averaged into your stats in games you lose so losses kill your stats. Bonuses and all star appearances are based on stats so money is involved.

You just tweaked or clarified your initial idea. This clarification is one option for the weighted idea I suggested. It could work, but assigning zero stat to losing efforts may be drastic.
