At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I hope someone can post a summary on what Danny said. Anyway, here’s an interesting article about the team’s current struggles. It’s a bit harsh on our All Stars but unfortunately it’s what a lot of us fans have been seeing as well. It’s now on Danny and Brad to right the ship.

Q: Why have we become the Washington Generals and every team we play becomes the Harlem Globetrotters?
A: "It's hard to explain. We talked last week about the intensity level and how it hasn't been there. But I don't have an explanation. Our team is not playing well. We're not playing hard consistently...I don't have an explanation. It's been frustrating for the players, and the coaches, and all of Celtics nation. But I think that the notion that this is all Jaylen and Jayson, or our team is not any good...I think that some people don't realize that lack of confidence in one another or belief in one another comes and goes in the season...but this long of a stretch has been frustrating. Having said that I still am a believer that our team can make a run. I just think that it's an interesting year. I wish I had answers for you. I don't."

Q: Yesterday Gorman came on and was angry. He mentioned that Jaylen and Jayson have become ball-stoppers. Is that a fair assessment?
A: "I think that I would say it differently. I think that it's unfair to just say that they are ball-stoppers. But here's the thing about Jaylen and Jayson, you know they've been shielded before because they had other good veterans around them...now they're the stars. So the microscope is on them...I think the ball-stoppage is partly their fault and partly other players' fault...I think we need to surround them with more scoring off the bench. We need guys to play with more swagger and confidence that aren't subservient to Jaylen and Jayson and will just play their game...This is not out of the ordinary for young star players to get the brunt [of the blame] for a team losing."

Q: But that's not how they always have played. And if it's the pieces around them, isn't that a you problem? The trade deadline is coming up and people are wondering how far does the team have to fall before you decide it's not worth it to make a move?
A: "I think those are legitimate questions that I don't have answers to. But I will say this is a me problem... I love our two young guys. They're not perfect and they're learning. And this adversity is part of their growth and development...We are playing terribly, we don't have a good enough team. But winning is expected in Boston...I am looking to do something that can make a difference on our team.

[More JB and JT talk]

Q: What do you wish you did differently in the offseason?
A: "There are things I wish I did. But I won't address them because they involve players...there's choices we made that could have made somewhat of a difference. But maybe not, I'm not saying that would have for sure alleviated the adversity we're facing right now."

Q: Is there something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about?
A: "No definitely not."

Q: No tuning out of the coach?
A: "I have always been impressed with how good of a defensive team we've been in the Brad Stevens era with our undersized roster...when I hear that a coach has been tuned out that's usually from a coach that does nothing but screaming and yelling."

Q: Or they run their course and become white noise... [references Terry Francona]
A: "Definitely not. I just think that this is a Danny Ainge and our players' commitment issue more than anything else...The only thing you could possibly say about all of this is that this year is very different and so we have to find a way to endure and have more resolve."

Q: Waiting until the offseason to use the Trade Exception seems like you're conceding this entire year?
A: "No. But the timing is important. Wyc is probably saying that the most likely scenario of a deal that we'd want to happen is in the offseason. And if we use a big portion in the season it will mean we can't do a big deal in the offseason."

Q: Finally, people want to know what are you going to do to fix this?
A: "Well, listen, I understand. I don't have those answers and it probably isn't going to be answered until closer to the deadline. We've been close a couple times, but time will tell."

TP Jiri, great job. I'm almost certain they've given up this season as lost and will retool in the offseason. That's probably the vibe that the players are getting, that no help is coming, which is why they are going through the motions.

It's going to be a challenge for the Jays, to play their best and create their own motivation to excel when there's not much at stake. They've had the privilege of making the playoffs every year since they've been drafted and the ECF the last four years, since they were fortunate to be drafted by a contender and being in a team full of talent instead of a deadbeat team. Now they're in the struggle to avoid the lottery, which is a different type of challenge. Now they're largely in the spotlight, there will be no Kyrie, Horford or Hayward to blame. I'm looking forward to see how they respond.

I'm also looking forward to see how our fans respond. We'll see who the bandwagoners are now that times are tough

I’m looking forward to how they respond in these next four games. They’ve been criticized in national media and we’re about to see what these guys are made of.

I'm not optimistic. I think this team overall is lacking toughness - and I'm not necessarily talking about physical toughness. More what Ainge said about players not being subservient to the Jays and stepping in and playing their game.

From earlier today. See link for audio.

https://985thesportshub.com/2021/03/04/danny-ainge-celtics-bury-teams-trades-toucher-rich/

Celtics president of basketball ops Danny Ainge joined 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich for his weekly call on Thursday. One of the big topics was trades – specifically, the notion that Ainge won’t make a trade unless he can “bury” the other team. That’s what one West GM reportedly told ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

Ainge pushed back hard on that idea, instead describing his dealings as the product of a mutual interest between two teams. And typically, the other GM knows what he’s doing too. So Ainge dismissed the idea that he could dupe another NBA GM into making a bad deal.

“I think that’s ridiculous,” Ainge said. “I have conversations regularly, daily, with [opposing GMs]. It’s not about winning a deal, it’s about finding a partner that needs and wants what we have, and us finding and wanting what [they] have. I’m not trying to bury anybody in a deal. I’m trying to make our team better.

“Listen, I’ve heard people say that I overvalue my players. I think that’s the case with everybody. I really like my guys. Even when they’re not playing well, I like the players. I’m around them every day. I enjoy them. I enjoy them as people. I want to see them succeed. I’m trying to help them and surround them with people that can help them succeed. So I don’t know if I overvalue them, but I do like them. If anything, maybe I’m guilty of liking my people too much as people and knowing the fit and the culture that is created in the organization. But I don’t think that I’m trying to pull a fast one on other organizations or other people that I’m dealing with. They know what we have and they like them or they don’t.”

I'm almost certain they've given up this season as lost and will retool in the offseason.

Anyone who's given up ought to be traded or fired.

That's probably the vibe that the players are getting, that no help is coming, which is why they are going through the motions.

Everybody ought to get settled in their minds: no, no help is coming. That's a good thing. You're it, you're the ones, you're the guys who are going to go out and win games - or go down fighting.

It's going to be a challenge for the Jays, to play their best and create their own motivation to excel when there's not much at stake.

Everything is at stake. Every career has a time stamp on it. Millions of dollars in future salary are at stake. Reputations are at stake. Development of your game is at stake. Above all, pride is at stake.

Don Nelson once said, "There's no such thing as garbage time in the NBA." That goes for garbage games and garbage seasons as well. There is NO time when you don't play full out. Play to win or sit.

Now they're largely in the spotlight, there will be no Kyrie, Horford or Hayward to blame. I'm looking forward to see how they respond.

Yes, this is the crucial thing. This is where greatness is forged, in the fiery furnace of adversity - or else where the tender hopes of a young team are incinerated.

I love these guys, and I'm very encouraged by Brad's recent comments about them tuning out the noise and staying together.

I'm also looking forward to see how our fans respond. We'll see who the bandwagoners are now that times are tough

And kudos to you, cheering for the team when things go bad. For me, this is a cherished moment as a fan. Every rebound, every stop, every charge taken, every dive to the floor - I'm getting to my feet a little quicker and yelling a little louder.

Do I need to remind everyone that this is the Boston Celtics?

One more comment about the sports media. Boy am I p---ed off about the gossip and the finger-pointing. I guess you can expect that from some fans, but reporters and columnists really should do better.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

From earlier today(4/1):

When asked that question on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich Show Thursday morning, Ainge proved he’s just as baffled as everyone else.

“I wish I had an answer to that,” the Celtics’ president of basketball operations said.

Ainge touched on the team’s continued struggles after the trade deadline in the interview, withstanding questions about the Celtics’ effort level and mental discipline when faced with adverse conditions. Those issues were on display Wednesday night as the Celtics fell behind to the Mavericks early before mounting a late-game comeback that eventually fell short in the final minute.

“I do see adversity having an impact,” he admitted. “I know guys were ready to play. They were excited to play. They were in good spirits. They started the game out with energy. And when shots didn’t fall in the first half, I just saw some heads hanging.”

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens went so far as to question his team’s collective toughness after the loss, saying Boston lets adversity “take us out of what we’re doing for too long.”
“We need to show up and compete every night with urgency, all the way through the game regardless of what just happened,” he said. “And so, I don’t really care about the future and I don’t really care about the first 48 games. Like, what are we going to do? That’s just the question. It’s time to show up.”

Ainge, meanwhile, said he holds “everyone,” including himself and Stevens, responsible for the team’s subpar performance this season. But he clarified Stevens has “zero responsibility” for players missing shots or playing with a lack of energy, saying the idea that coaches should motivate players is “way overrated.”

“I’m putting it on my players’ shoulders right now,” Ainge said. “I think they need to look internally, they need to want it more, and they need to be able to fight through adversity better. That’s all I’m saying.

“I know Brad fights through adversity,” he added. “I know he’s preparing for the game and he’s respecting every opponent that he sees. I don’t have any doubt about that. But I’m worried about some nights the way we come out to play.”

Ainge said the team’s attitude and chemistry over the last 24 games of the regular season as much as the results will factor into how the Celtics approach the offseason: whether or not to continue building around the pieces they have currently or “mix things up” with the roster.

But he pushed back on suggestions that drastic changes must be made.

“I still see our guys working. I still see them motivated…I still like a lot of our guys and their everyday approach to the game.”
“I just…for the life of me, it’s hard to understand how we can play so hard and so well for those 30-32 minutes a night and just not — and every night it’s a different time, it can be the fourth quarter, it can be the second quarter or the first quarter — we just don’t play well. And we don’t fight as hard as we need to through that adversity. I wish I had a better answer for you. I don’t.”

Ainge also repeatedly mentioned the Celtics’ struggles to stay fully healthy and available for games, which was punctuated by Robert Williams unexpectedly missing the Mavericks game with a non-COVID illness.

“There is no continuity. There’s different players in different positions every night,” he said. “We’d just like to get everybody not sick and not injured so we can play together for a couple weeks at a time and see how we do.”

On a health-related note, Ainge told Toucher and Rich he has received a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine after meeting the state’s age requirements for eligibility (he’s 62). He mentioned he has spoken with a number of Celtics and believes “most of them” intend to get their COVID shots in the next few weeks, though he also said there will be “at least a couple” who won’t want to get the vaccine.

Danny at no end defends Brad

I guess I could see where he is coming from

Brad has taken different groups far

And this group this season doesnt have the legs

Lets see what happens when TL and Romeo return. But if things dont change in the next 5-7 games. Celts  end up 7-10 seed and get eliminated early.

I expect a drastic change on some kind in the off season

I was skeptical when they presented Kemba as a leader when we signed him and I was thinking what has he ever lead Charlotte too.   I recall him in the NCAAs though.

I think Brown would like to be a leader but does not know how.   Tatum is not a leader.   Rob plays hard every but he does not have the gravitas to lead our stars.   Smart tries to lead but suffers the same problems as Rob as far as leadership and takes bad shots.   Which leaves us with what?   A glaring lack of leadership.   I know Kyrie said our guys do not know how to win but he was not a leader either.  IT lead by example.   We have not have a bonafide leader since KG.

Danny needs to step in and fire at least half of Brad’s staff. We need some former NBA players, especially some guys who have a little fire.
