Makes sense to go after him if you think Danny has a pathological, franchise-crippling desire to trade for injury-prone stars.

He just cannot stay on the floor. Even in the bubble, where he was tearing it apart, he got hurt.

It was a gamble by the Mavs to pair Doncic with such an injury-prone guy as his #2. It's clearly not working. Unfortunate for Dallas is KP has a really hard to move contract (remind anyone of a certain small guard we have?)

If we wanted to get in on this deal I would love something like: https://tradenba.com/trades/x_jX_7wZ3
Boston trades: Kemba Walker, Semi Ojeleye
Boston receives: Dejounte Murray, Rudy Gay

Dallas trades: Kristaps Porzingis
Dallas receives: Kemba Walker, Semi Ojeleye

San Antonio trades: Dejounte Murray, Rudy Gay
San Antonio receives: Kristaps Porzingis

However, I could totally see a swap around KP and Andre Drummond appealing to both sides.

I don't think there is any way that the Spurs trade Murray and Gay for Drummond.  They might for Porzingis though.

Sorry, my phrasing was really poor (it's early in the morning!)

I meant the Mavs might go for Drummond in a wholly separate deal involving Porzingis, without a third team.

If Kemba and Ojeleye to Dallas can get you  Porzingis, why then trade Porzingis for Murray and Gay?  Do you really prefer Murray and Gay to Porzingis?  I guess with Gay and Murray, half the salary is expiring but why not go for it and get Porzingis if you can?  The potential ceiling with Tatum-Brown-Porzingis is really high.

In Feb (8 games), Porzingis is 22.8 pts, 8.5 Rebs, 1.8 assts, on 50.0%/42.3%/90.3% in 29.9 min.  Even if you assume you have to heavily manage his minutes, that is still really nice production from a big.  And Dallas is 5-3 in those games (albeit mostly home games) so he is helping then win.

Add Smart and Thompson (or Theis if you prefer) for defense and that is a really good core team.  Or you can go really crazy and start Pritchard and Williams.  Then you have a crazy young team that would be pretty good.  Play Smart off the bench and trade Thompson for a vet wing off the bench (and to save some money).

Now I get that Dallas is only selling (if they are selling) because they are probably thinking they are selling high.  But giving up Kemba and Ojeleye isn't that bad, if Dallas would even do this.  Yes, there is risk with Porzingis' injury history but I think we could manage his minutes and still win plenty.  We were 8-3 with Smart-Brown-Tatum-Theis-Thompson at the start of the season.

Man I just can't wait to emotionally invest in more players who can't stay healthy.  It brings me so much joy.

I'd take that Murray/Gay package myself.

Porzingis 100% healthy is a good get, but his movement this season has been noticeably worse. I just don't trust the knees on 7'3" guy with a history of knee surgeries. Those stories don't typically end well. And honestly, I trust Dallas training staff more than ours.

Getting Murray - a really good defense guard with a more well rounded game than people think - would be about as good of a return on Kemba as anyone could hope for at this point.

The reason he's available is because he's struggled since his return from injury. His defensive has been really bad this season and its because he isn't moving well at all.

I don't know if he can bounce back at some point, but he's a 7 footer with a history of lower body injuries. Dallas' training staff is one of the best in the business, if they're looking to get off of him, I'd take that as a red flag.
I've been amazed at how bad Porzingis has looked on defense.  He's probably hurting but he's out on the court appearing to not even be trying on that end.  I've seen him stand there with his hands down with guys shooting right in his face a couple times.  He must have a couple torn rotator cuffs in addition to his other issues ::)

Frankly, I do prefer Murray and Gay to Porzingis. I have absolutely no faith in his ability to stay healthy. Murray is a great defender, solid passer, elite rebounder for his size and picks his shots well. He barely turns it over and is on a good contract. He'd give us great defensive versatility and to my eye would really fit this team. He's also much more suited to playing in two guard lineups with Pritchard than Kemba is.

You hit on something important - the expiring salary of gay. I think that would position us quite nicely to go after Collins with a deal based around Smart and prospects/picks, without the salary concerns that many have pointed out. If we could do it purely as Smart, Langford and a 1st or two that would leave us in an awesome spot long-term. Say Smart, Langford & Teague (+ picks as necessary) for Collins, Rondo and Snell.

Our rotation could be:
Murray - Pritchard - Rondo
Brown - Nesmith - Snell
Tatum - Gay
Collins - G Williams
R Williams - Theis - Thompson

That all being said, even without thinking about posturing for a Collins deal, I'd prefer Murray and Gay

Dallas should 100% try to get rid of him. He’s not the right fit next to Luka.

KP is just too injury prone to risk taking on his contract.  I'd rather trade for Vucevic if we are taking back a big 25m+ salary.
