Brad raises a team’s floor. His teams have consistently outperformed expectations, averaged 50+ wins over the past 5 years, and been to 3 out of the last 4 Conference Finals despite roster change, injuries to key players and a myriad of issues. He has a lot of leeway with good reason, he’s been successful by every measure, but he has to improve and the 2 main areas are his 4th quarter offensive strategy and player rotations.
His inconsistent rotations stagnate chemistry and player development. High ceiling players like Rob Williams, Langford, Pritchard, and Nesmith should be given every chance to develop instead of these matchup-based and spot minute rotations.
His 4th quarter offensive strategy lacks tact and awareness. For example, the first Hawks game Trae Young is lighting it up and he talks about how he tried to throw different defenses at him instead of making him defend the ball handler by having his man set picks. I don’t care if it’s Trae Young or anyone else, having to check Tatum and/or Brown then make plays on offense is much more difficult than having him rest defending a spot up shooter before going on offense. The Raptors and Heat turned Kemba and his excellence in the clutch into a non-factor because they made him play defense on every play.
Without these adjustments, Brad is going to have to be bailed out by great play, which will serve as a mask to his tactical deficiencies.
