I look at it as who are the top true Centers in the league and how valuable are they to their teams. Many bigs these days are hybrid of PF and Center so I guess the attitude of many is that a true center is a dinosaur, no longer relevant in the league. Here are the top true Centers (think of them as players who play only center), consider how valuable you think these players are in "today's NBA":
Top Tier:
Jokic
Embiid
Towns
Vucevich (?)
These are all extremely valuable players, stars.
The next tier:
Gobert
Capela
Valanciunas
Turner
Ayton
All valuable players. I have excluded other very good to great players who could be argued aren't "True" centers or centers only but are top true bigs:
Davis
Sabonis
Porzingis
Adebayo
Giannis
Wood
Statistically, Andre the Dinosaur is probably not in the top tier of True Centers but I think he may be slightly above the Capelas and the Goberts of the world.
My point again is that Centers can be much more valuable players than are being given credit here. For the Celtics, I would prefer to add an offensive minded PF (say Randle) than a true Center as I feel that is a much bigger hole for us right now. We have Thompson and Theis as decent centers but that leaves us with Grant Williams and Ojeleye to play PF. If we somehow got Drummond, we would still have a giant hole at PF.
