The players Union agreed to the game... isnt He Vice President of the union? Or is that just a meaningless title that pays him more money for doing nothing Lol

 https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30837547/los-angeles-lakers-lebron-james-zero-energy-zero-excitement-all-star-game

Wah wah . Why do I have to work (bounce a ball for 20 minutes) to make millions. Wahhhhh

"I have zero energy and zero excitement about an All-Star Game this year," James said after the Los Angeles Lakers' 114-93 win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday. "I don't even understand why we're having an All-Star Game."

"Short offseason for myself and my teammates, 71 days," James said, referring to the time the Lakers had from Game 6 of the NBA Finals in October to opening night against the LA Clippers in December. "And then coming into this season, we were told that we were not having an All-Star Game, so we'd have a nice little break. Five days [in March] from the 5th through the 10th, an opportunity for me to kind of recalibrate for the second half of the season. My teammates as well. Some of the guys in the league.

"And then they throw an All-Star Game on us like this and just breaks that all the way up. So, um, pretty much kind of a slap in the face."

Honestly, I think its pretty stupid the league is even trying to pull this off in the pandemic.  It's unnecessary.  I have no qualms with the players complaining about this.

agreed. Pretty irresponsible

Fox also came out stating it shouldn't happen

now that big boy Lebron has spoken

NBA probably won't do it.   Perhaps just announce who is on the team.  Mid season type award/popularity

Fox complained about it initially.  Of course it gets more play when Lebron does.   I agree with both.  It is a dumb idea to have a meaningless event during the pandemic.

Fox's comments:

"If I'm gonna be brutally honest I think it's stupid. If we have to wear masks and do all this for a regular game, what's the point of bringing the All-Star Game back? But obviously money makes the world go 'round, so it is what it is. I'm not really worried about it. If I'm voted so be it, if I'm not..."

"You know you get fined? If you're supposed to be in it and you're not hurt and you decide not to play, that's a hefty fine. So hell yeah I would play in it. Hope I don't get fined for saying that."

League is doing everything it can to find revenue. They were down 10% last year, even with getting a big part of the season in. This year, with largely empty stadiums and fewer games, it'll be even more.

Players are mostly getting their $$$. Easy for them to complain about meaningless games, it's the owners taking it in the shorts.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Imagine being a player just trying to stick in the league and hearing James say something as entitled as this. I understand concerns with Covid, but he doesn't even really bring that up; just about wanting extra rest. Lebron likely wouldn't have even won a Title last season if he and AD weren't given 4 months to completely heal and get ready for the playoff bubble. For some players, this will be the only All-Star game they ever get invited to - I'm pretty put off by his lack of appreciation for what the NBA has done for him and his legacy.

I agree, but I suspect that there is a divide among the players. The guys in the bottom half of the league are going to want that extra revenue, whereas the superstars could care less.

except he did.

Quote
"We're also still dealing with a pandemic," James said. "We're still dealing with everything that's been going on, and we're going to bring the whole league into one city that's open? Obviously, the pandemic has absolutely nothing to do with it at this point when it comes to that weekend.

"Obviously, you guys can see that I'm not very happy about it."

He also said he would participate if selected

Quote
"It's the agreement that the players' association and the league came about. ... It's out of my hands," James said. "I'll be there if I'm selected. But I'll be there physically, but not mentally."

I think an actually All-Star game has lost it's entertainment value long ago. I can watch every game of every team if I so wish as well as instant highlights from any game or player. The rarity of seeing your favorite player(s) on other teams is gone. I cant remember last time I watched an All Star game in any league.

Name All Stars give the league a 5 day rest and give us some G league tournament during the break where fringe guys get highlighted.
ok fine

Did you miss last years with the new format?

It was the best all star game ever.   To the level of a game 7 of a playoff series.

Nurse messed up Kemba knees leaving him out there so long

nope earlier my young man  ;D

All games in general stink (any sport).  Its just messing around, maybe becomes a little serious in the last 5 mins

Last season teams had to win quarters and reach a certain point total to win

Lowry was taking charges and so were others (at an all star game, who would have thought).   It was a display of top talents playing really hard ala game 7 of a playoff series

In case you don't remember the game. Here is a clip again of the last few mins of the game.   1st to 157. No shot clock.

Downplaying a product that your business is trying to sell isn't the best move either. As soon as the decision is made, it makes sense to go along with it. Otherwise you're still doing it, but less successfully.

I don’t really get the point if there is going to be no fans etc to fly all these guys to the all star game. Seems kind of pointless and I’d argue since a lot of these teams have been short staffed due to contract tracing etc, the players would be better off just getting the rest tbh. I get the financial thing and the implications of advertising, tv air time, etc. so it makes sense the league is trying to recoup as much money as possible.
