Just like Toronto traded a potentially champion-less future with DeRozan for a title by trading for a disgruntled superstar, we need to follow suit to beat LA and prevent a future where LeBron’s Lakers have more titles than the Celtics:
Step One:The big trade for the offensive superstar
Brown
2025 1st round pick (top 3 protected)
All 2021-2024 2nd round picks
For
James Harden (2+1 contract, player option)
Commentary: The volume of 2nd round picks to Houston can help them save face, although they can spin things by saying they believe Brown will be a transcendental wing they are building all their future picks around. There’s not a better deal available for Harden if you believe Brown can become a top ten player (many do not, which is why some of us want at least a couple of years of title contention with a top five player).
Step Two:The trade for the defensive big to shutdown Giannis and AD AKA the trade for the Steiffel Tower paired with an immediate 3+1 contract extension (team option).
It will take a lot to make it happen, but it can be done:
https://tradenba.com/trades/W6uE7yzAACommentary: Pair Gobert with TT on the floor when we’re up against elite bigs like Giannis, AD, and Embiid. Otherwise, dominate the boards for 48 MPG when they’re both healthy by always having one of the two at center. This is what we need to get by Giannis and Embiid in the east and overcome AD in the Finals.
Starting lineup:Harden
Smart
Tatum
Theis
Gobert
6th Man: Lou Williams
Depth:TT
Beverley
Ring-chasing veteran who can play the 4/5
Teague
Nesmith
Ojeleye
Pritchard
Edwards
Fall
Commentary: Almost always pair Smart with Harden because they’re perfect complements and ensure we out-match every backcourt in the league. Our backup backcourt is Beverley and Williams, one of the best reserve backcourts in the league IMHO.
Give Smart 34-36 MPG at both 1/2, as well as some 3 when he’s on the court at the same time as Beverley and Harden (e.g., teams with two great offensive guards), and watch Marcus potentially win DPY.
Let Harden and Smart utterly confuse teams by changing up who’s 1 and who’s 2 play-by-play (Harden was awesome as the backup PG in OKC back in the day - he could really elevate his game by bringing back some of that and adopting CBS’ brilliance).
In terms of youth, 4-5 of our bottom 9 depth are young and could still grow into solid contributors, if not a future starter in terms of Nesmith (got a good feeling about that kid). We would still have our 2022 and 2024 first-round picks, too. After years of making multiple picks outside of the top 10 with scant success save for one good year from Rozier, it’s time to try a different approach.
Harden and Gobert are in their prime. If we extend Gobert, who possibly wants to be in Boston because it’s the shortest flight to France, we have at least a 2-year window to run the tables. Make Harden feel welcome like KG before him, and perhaps the possibility of dethroning LeBron/Lakers every year gets him to re-sign long-term to close out his career. That would make our window 5-6 years given the less physical style of play by Harden. It’s possible Tatum and Smart will become even more elite, too.
New Big 3: Tatum, Harden and Gobert, and a supporting cast almost on par with our 2008 squad.
Beat LA: This is the way.
