  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This is a great move by the Clippers. They gave up so much in order to get him and there is no benefit to being bad for the next several years. People may say that George is overrated and that he wilts in the playoffs, but he is still a surefire All-Star still in his prime. The money is killer, but that's what 10+ year veterans make now.

Whether or not Kawhi re-signs, this is still a move they had to make. And I would imagine Kawhi is planning on staying. His goal was to go back home to LA, not just visit for a year or 2 and move on to a random franchise.

I'm happy to see they are committed to being a winning franchise. They still may very well give the Lakers a run for their money.

So there core will be

PG Beverly
SG Leonard
SF George
PF Morris (or Ibaka if you want to go big)
C Zubac

with Williams, Ibaka (or Morris, not sure who starts), Jackson, Batum and others on the bench.

That seems like a contending team.  I think Paul George will be fine.  He scored 21 points on 16 shots with 41% 3 shooting.  I know he was bad in the playoffs but he is still a good player.  Is he any more overpaid than Kemba Walker?  It is just what you have to do these days.

I wonder if they get anything out of Batum?  He was once a pretty good player.  All they need from him is to come off the bench and play decent for, what, 15 minutes?
true

With all the attention George and Leonard get, all batum needs to do is be a spot up shooter and hit wide open 3s.

I don’t know what his issue has been in the playoffs, but we’ve seen him have success there before. I think it’s a little overblown, but they don’t need him to be spectacular like he was on that run with Indy.

They have Kawhi, and some good role players who can hit shots. If he just doesn’t suck in the playoffs, they will be a very tough team to beat (with a halfway competent coach, sorry Doc!).

Literally all they need him to be is somewhat good.

The Clippers mortgaged their future to sign Kawhi in the trade for George. Having PG on a 1 year contract and risking him leaving for nothing in exchange would’ve placed them in a terrible position.

He’s a 6’8+/220 wing, who shot 22/6/4, 42% from 3, and above average defense last year; as an asset, he’s going to retain value, teams are going to line up to trade for him if it doesn’t work with the Clippers in the next 2 years and his playoff performance is the issue  (it won’t be as good as what they gave up, but they can salvage the lopsided trade).

They have to extend Kawhi and continue to improve the team’s chemistry and changing the pieces that have to be changed. They already made a mistake trading a 1st and resigning Marcus Morris to an overvalued contract, but this George contract was crucial to their future.
