If I've made a mistake let me know.  I didn't include the deep bench for these teams because right now each team has a million training camp guys.

My thoughts:

- It really stands out to me that the Celtics are relying on Nesmith - Ojeleye - Grant as the backup wing / forwards.  Feels very thin compared to some of their competition.  Compare, for example, to the Nets bench, or the Heat. Both teams the Celts could face in the playoffs.

- The Hawks feel like a team I would put together in My League in NBA 2K.  Deep with serviceable players. Not sure how well it fits together and they're lacking in real difference makers, apart from Trey, who probably hurts you as much defensively as he helps on offense.

- I really dislike the Nets but it's difficult to imagine them being bad unless Durant isn't close to who he was and/or he and Kyrie miss a lot of time (rest on back to backs etc).

- The Sixers bench still sucks, and they still don't have a shot creator who can shoot.  Nothing they do will really matter if Embiid continues to be a superstar only for the first 5 minutes or so of each half before he gets tired.

- If the Hornets want to be in the playoff hunt it seems to me they'd be better off spending money like the Hawks, i.e. filling out their roster with useful players, instead of overspending to add a 31 year old B / C tier star.  Their bench is super thin.

- Overall I would say the Detroit Pistons look more like a playoff team than I would have thought before doing this, assuming Rose and Blake are able to play.  However they are relying on a very young bench.  Very young.

- Did the Pacers do anything?  They seem to have the exact same roster that was a first round speed bump last year.

- The Wizards look pretty good to me.  They won't be able to stop a nosebleed, as they say, but they should be able to score with anyone.

- The Knicks look like the worst team in the conference again.  They'll compete for the worst record in the league.

- The Bulls roster doesn't seem to fit, for me. It's weird that they didn't do more to try to retool.

- The Cavaliers look like a team that could win a modest number of regular season games if Collin Sexton and Darius Garland mature enough to be above replacement starters.  That's a big ask, though. Sexton has been terrible on defense and Garland was just terrible.  The thing for me is that although they are not a good team, you can see that the shape of the roster makes some sense. But it would require them to actually try on defense and run a functional NBA offense.

- The Bucks bench seems really small, to me, but I guess they're trying to stock up on guys who could maybe see short minutes in a playoff series alongside Giannis, Jrue, Middleton, and Lopez.  Don't need size there, just a versatile wing / forward who can hit an open shot.  They've got multiple guys who could fit that bill.

- The Raptors will still be good because they're the Raptors but the roster looks solidly worse to me, especially factoring in another year of aging for Lowry and considering how bad Siakam was in the bubble.  Felt like he got exposed.

You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

TP for making this topic. As a matter of fact I was busy doing exactly the same thing (for both conferences) to make a prediction for both conferences.

I have had a couple of the same observations:

- Boston has a very inexperienced bench
- Toronto, based on their moves you'd bet against them, but every year they exceed expectations
- Indiana is reliant on whether Oladipo can come back to All Star form
- Atlanta is really deep, if their coach can make it work they can become dangerous
- Charlotte's bench is so weak that I can't imagine them making the playoffs

Boston Celtics

Starters

Kemba Walker
Marcus Smart
Jaylen Brown
Jayson Tatum
Daniel Theis

Key Reserves

Jeff Teague
Aaron Nesmith
Semi Ojeleye
Grant Williams
Tristan Thompson
This assuming Kemba misses a few games and comes back relatively healthy.

In all honesty, our bench sucks.

It's coming, already have it typed up, but I figured it'd be good to separate the conferences so the post wasn't super long.

In fairness, I think the bench could look significantly better if a few things happen that I think are not unreasonable:

1. Grant and Thompson become starters
2. Langford or Nesmith emerges as a legit wing piece, either via defense or shooting
3. Robert Williams matures and settles down enough on defense to secure a regular rotation spot

Teague
Smart
Langford/Nesmith
Daniel Theis
Robert Williams

So long as Jeff Teague isn't totally washed up (and/or required to start full time b/c Kemba is out), that should be decent.

Assuming Kemba comes back soonish and stays relatively healthy throughout the season, my depth chart would be something like this

PG: Kemba - Smart - Pritchard - Teague
SG: Brown - Smart - Romeo
SF: Nesmith - Brown - Romeo - Semi
PF: Tatum - Grant - Semi
C: Theis - Thompson - Timelord

I'm high on Nesmith. Imo, he should be our starting SF on opening night.
I'm low on Teague. His stint with the Hawks was pretty terrible. Obviously, the Hawks were pretty terrible as well. Hope he returns to his old self now that he'll be playing for a contending(?) team.

I don't know what to expect from Teague.  I honestly can't remember paying a lot of attention to his play during his time with Atlanta (most recently) and Minnesota.

On paper he seems like he could be a significant addition because he's more of a pure point guard than Wanamaker was and should provide a floor-general presence that was lacking at times last year on the bench.

I could also see him being pretty much totally washed up and we could end up seeing Payton Pritchard eat all of Teague's minutes.

Didn't watch him play for the Hawks either, but the advanced stats suggest that he was a net negative.

Offensive Box Plus/Minus: -1.6
Defensive Box Plus/Minus: -1.5
Box Plus/Minus: -3.1
eFG%: 44.2 (league average was 52.9 last season)
TS%: 51.2 (league average was 56.3 last season)
Value Over Replacement Player: -0.2

Hope he returns to his old self. I guess time will tell.

TP to Phosita for a quality effort putting this together.  only note I'd offer is that Romeo will be part of the bench brigade.  he's shown he can play quality defense which is critical to get on the court for Brad.

as for tank teams in the East, it's the Knicks, Bulls and Cavs off the bat (and especially the Cavs after they move Love for picks/youth).  Pistons will quasi-tank -- will try at first but realize their 'best' players can't stay healthy and they need to move them and tank for a top prospect for a couple of years

I've seen people saying the Cavs will trade Love and/or Drummond.  My question is -- to where?  Who is trading assets for either of those guys?
