Why would Char send a trade exception when they can sign Hayward outright after stretching Batum?

This is exactly what is happening.

It is disappointing that we received no return from GH but he did not land with a direct rival.  Had GH landed with Ind, Ind would have had 2 all-stars (Dipo and Sabonis), GH (still a borderline all-star) and a great scorer in Warren.

This new contract must be crazy expensive to insure, given GH's recent injury history.

This. And in these kinds of situations when it’s not completely against the receiving team’s best interest (i.e. the two teams are not really competitors at the same level) it’s usually done as a favor to the other team.

People need to remember that relationships are key in this league, and an act of good will like this goes a long way. Just like we did with them last year with Rozier (and also as a favor to Rozier), an an act of good will can benefit you in later transactions and deals down the line.

This. And in these kinds of situations when it’s not completely against the receiving team’s best interest (i.e. the two teams are not really competitors at the same level) it’s usually done as a favor to the other team.

People need to remember that relationships are key in this league, and an act of good will like this goes a long way. Just like we did with them last year with Rozier (and also as a favor to Rozier), an an act of good will can benefit you in later transactions and deals down the line.

We did them a big favor last season with rozier and kemba. We did not need to do that. So maybe they will return favor???

I’d take Batum’s 1-yr deal lol we don’t have cap space anyway and we could use another vet on this squad. Will it impact our luxury tax? No right?

It does. After the signing of Thompson we can't absorb 27M. In fact we currently are 16M below the tax line.
It does mean we could take Cody Zeller (cap relief for the Hornets) on + TPE.

Then we again would have a 3-headed-center rotation (Theis/R.Williams/Zeller). It would require Stevens to play 2 bigs with Thompson/G.Williams/Ojeleye as pecking order for the PF position. Otherwise we would have a real logjam upfront with servicable bigs without anyone standing out.
