Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer came out with another bombshell: the Knicks are interested in Boston Celtics’ Gordon Hayward. “Gordon Hayward, who obviously — there’s already been rumors we’ve heard about maybe him wanting to move on. The Knicks are interested, I’ve heard…,” O’Connor said on The Ringer NBA Show The Mismatch.

I think O’Connor is one of the least credible pundits out there.  I literally think he makes stuff up for attention.  But, there you go.

I don't agree with that. He seems like a standup guy to me that has developed real sources.

His opinions are a little click-baity, with the Killian Hayes projection in this draft, but his sources seem solid.

I'd imagine that if Hayward went to the Knicks, it would be part of another deal that brings Chris Paul or someone else to build a more competitive team right now.

I like that O'Connor's big board isn't just an approximation of what the consensus is. If you look at the history of the draft there are often busts all over the lottery, even with the first overall pick. However, even though most people know this, they still rank conservatively because it's safer to go along with the crowd. If you just follow the consensus, you have a defense when you turn out to be wrong.

I think more draft pundits should go by who they actually think is going to be the best 10 years from now, not just shift the same players a few spaces up or down their "expected" slot. I guess it raises the question whether you're supposed to be ranking guys based on potential or whether you think they actually WILL reach that potential.

I think “big boards” should be based upon who will be the best player, not as a rookie but overall.

Mock drafts, on the other hand, should be a prediction about where a player will end up.

In terms of my criticism above, I think KOC is fine as a draft analyst.  I don’t think he’s particularly plugged into the NBA and I don’t think he’s an insider, but he’s happy to pretend he is.

He’s kind of like Sherrod.  Likable guy, has some talent, but just not connected.

I don't know about all of this. If one of the major problems is that his wife doesn't like Boston, I don't think that New York would exactly be her cup of tea. Indiana seems more likely to work for everyone.

I think he's come a long way since the Ringer started up shop. He's not really supposed to be a "scoops" guy though, so let's just take his comment for what it is, something that probably came up during the podcast but not supposed to be a big bombshell or anything like that. What's likely is that New York has at least inquired with the Celtics about Hayward, which would qualify as having "interest." I mean, considering they have cap space and are totally irrelevant, the Knicks are probably sniffing around anyone even remotely resembling a star right now.

This was true 4-5 years ago. He has since earned a solid reputation on The Ringer, and is now being quoted regularly by established journalists.  I don't think he makes stuff up.   It's just that the rumors he mentions are fuzzy; not thought out (e.g., Jrue H to the Celtics for picks).  Probably did hear that the Celtics were talking to the Pels about Jrue, and they were looking for a high pick as part of the package. But he was only speculating on the rest of it (maybe Kemba? That made no sense unless in a 3 team context).

People link to him to get hits from fans desperate for rumors, not because he’s credible.

As far as I’m aware, he’s never broken a single story or been right about much at all.  He’s like Chris Broussard, with fewer sauces.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I don't know about KOC's sources, but his draft analysis is up there with the best in the business. He also did a great job (back in the day on CB) taking a play and break it down using multiple video clips. I remember one specific instance where he showed how if AB could get his DHOs just a step or two back, he could be hitting 3s instead of long 2s. The video/picture analysis on CB was great for fans like me who were interested in understanding the game better a little better by using visuals.

I don’t recall him being in the forums.  He was a major contributor to the articles on here, one of several CelticsBloggers to go on to great things (Steve Weinman, KOC, Jared Weiss, Greg Cassoli, Jimmy Toscano, and a bunch of others I’m overlooking).

I like this trade idea:

https://tradenba.com/trades/INF-ia3Os

Consolidate all of our picks to get #8, and give up Hayward and our 2022 first-round pick for Mitchell Robinson. It makes us a better team in the future, perhaps even as early as this season. Improves our cap situation dramatically right away.

Well they've got nothing to give us so it's not interesting to me. If he opts out and goes to a crap team like the Knicks, all luck to him, I guess.

If the Knicks want Hayward, here's a scenario where they could get him from Boston:
The Celts sign Hayward for 4 years/100 million and trade him to New York with Vincent Poirier and their draft pick #14
for
Mitchell Robinson and Knicks pick #8.
