I think they realized that they need all the money they can get with already expected revenue losses due to no fans in stadiums and a shorter season - for the league to miss out on the Christmas Day TV revenue would put them in a huge hole and affect the salary cap and all their salaries the following year. It sucks to have a shorter offseason but let's be honest, they still have 2 months and they had a 4 month break during the last season anyway.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

Always ridiculous to think that the turnaround was too short for a few teams when they didn’t play for over four months before returning.

It was always LeBron being LeBron, who preferred rest over the extra salary that he doesn’t rely on, unlike the majority of the NBAPA.

I wish I could look forward to the day he retires, but that’s only the beginning. Once retired, he will weasel his way into ownership and continue his destruction of “his” league.

This was always going to be the case, imo, no matter how much the lebrons and pauls whined the opposite way (pure assumption)

With an increase in escrow, reduced income, the players who havent made 150 million plus in their careers would be greatly effected.

And also, if players didnt agree, then I think owners would have locked out.

But all this is great, stuff will happen fast and furious now.
46 days from Today the season will start.

so 46 days for draft, free agency, training camp, trades, I love it.

TP for the 'breaking news' Don - this is truly wonderful from a fan's perspective. We had a long break between the stop of the season in March until the re-start, but everything will now happen seemingly all at once. Usually when we are talking about the draft, we are preparing for a long break after Summer League; but the draft is essentially going to be the beginning of this season!

I don't think they were ever worried about the amount of rest.   I think it was always about having it as a bargaining chip to keep as much money out of escrow as possible.

I think this was the most expected outcome, and the one I preferred as a fan (surely no correlation there).

The January start with a 50ish game season would hurt those players most who haven't played since March. 10 months without meaningful games, and many of those games were just playing out the season. We might be close to a year now since some of those teams played a real meaningful game.

For some, I wouldnt be surprise (again speculation involving my general disgust, hate, annoyance with Lebronie) if LEbron wants to do all he can to prolong his career. He loved the shortened season and wants nothing more than for it to continue. He wants to prolong his career. He wants 20 years and he wants to play on the same team as his son.

Also because the NBA is definitely of two minds about a shortened season. They'd love to start on Christmas, but they have been going back and forth on adjusting from an 82 game season for a few reasons.

I saw a potential NBA offseason schedule on Boston Sports Tonight last night:

November 18 – NBA Draft
November 20-22 – Proposed start of free agency
December 1 – Proposed start of training camps
December 22 – Proposed start of season

The short gap between the draft and the start of training camps (only 13 days!) makes me wonder if the league will be reducing/eliminating the required gap between signing a draft pick and using their salary in a trade (usually it's 30 days).  If they keep it the same, it would make things way harder for us as far as trading for an established vet goes, since we don't have many contracts that are useful for salary matching (and I can't see many teams wanting to add a rookie that misses all but a couple days of training camp; we likely wouldn't love the idea of having said vet miss most of training camp, either).
I'm bitter.

Where are the games being played this upcoming season?

If the NBA Draft is November 18 and the proposed start of training camp is December 1, do the drafted players go to their new team and immediately go into quarantine, so they’re ready for camp?

With such a shortened training camp and no summer league for draftees, are draft picks de-valued for this draft? It can’t help someone like the Celtics, who would like to package their 3 picks to trade up. I mean, what team would want 3 draft picks in this type of situation?

As a fan of offseason activity, this is going to be a crazy month.

With the salary cap in flux you would think that cheap talent over vets would be preferred.
