Lets say if a team like the Pacers offers Hayward a 4 year deal worth 25 million per season.   Does he take that and leave the Celts

or pickup his player option?

Hayward has turned into the 4th option in a crowded house.  And who knows, may not be happy here.  He has had multiple injuries and downtime here also,  and there is a chance with another bad injury, could really cause his market value to drop by next season

Joining the Pacers could be ideal since he has family there/help with the kids

Only bad teams have the cap space to offer him such deals. It won’t make sense for them to that.
Maybe him picking his option can be the avenue for him to get home. Let’s just hope that Danny and pacers have reasonable expectations of what the transduction should look like.

Think the Hayward opts in and Cs try to extend him for a lower AAV.

Well the pacers don't have that much money. Between Turner, Sabonis, Warren, Lamb, Dipo, Brogdon, McDermit they have 106 million committed already.

I can't see any team that would offer him enough money where it would make sense to turn down 34 million, let alone one that is good enough to be an appealing destination.

I don’t think ownership will let danny do that. Unless Hayward takes a 7-8 M a year contract after next season I think he’s gone sooner or later before next season starts.

Huh?? You really think Hayward is only worth $8 mil per??? I think the Cs can get Hayward on an 3 year extension worth around $20 mil per. I think that’s roughly what he’s worth.

If I was him I'd opt out if that was the offer from Indy but Pacers have Warren.

He might be worth that but that’s not how they would view him after all those injuries and max money for 4 years.
I can’t think of anyone in the last 15-20 years being on an injury riddled max contract and then being retained by their team on another expensive deal... I can do research on that but typically every team moves on from an expensive and mostly injured player after the contract is up.

If he opts in and has another year like this one he is a MLE player.

He averaged 18,6,5 as the 4th option on the Cs while shooting at a 50/38/86 clip. He’s worth significantly more than the MLE and he’ll get it in this league.

I think he'll pick up the option.  It's a no brainer, unless he's just done with Boston for any reason.

Dude is set to make $34M next season, and this will most likely be a rough financial environment for free agents because of covid.  He's won't be anywhere close to that number if he leaves.

I predict he either take PO or opts out for a Cs resign.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

He actually had quite a decent year, but you are probably right. He will be 31 when his next contract begins, and while that is not old, he can't expect to have another injury riddled season and still receive a $20M+ long-term contract. The only reason the Cs can do that now is because they owe him $34M this upcoming season and would want to bring down the AAV.

If the Cs did offer him, say, a 4yr/$80M contract, I would not be surprised if he took it. I realize that only amounts to $15.3M/yr after this year, but that's also quite a bit more than the MLE and it's not like he has a spotless injury history. Ill-timed nagging injuries could limit him to the MLE, but Cousins/Thomas type injuries could make him vet minimum.

you have to understand...it is not just 34 million

It could be 4 years at 25 million per season on the flipside

What if he makes 34 million next season. But only able to make 10 million the year after that.   Right now Hayward is still young enough and can use the excuses of badluck injury/4th option(reason dip in stat) to command 20 plus million per season.

But at this rate/another injury... his market value could drop to role player and role player money

I was writing the same thing. He has a family he already made a good fortune there is no reason to risk betting everything on the next season. 80-90 for 4 years seems fair. And by the way he handled the birth of the his son it seems like he aproaches the issue emotionally and not strictly proffesionaly
