So some people are under the impression that his next contract could be the supermax

Is this true? I thought 2nd contracts(after rookie deal) has regular semi max limit

I have no issue with Tatum getting this (part of the reward for making all team) but doesnt make sense that Brown gave a hometown discount, yet Tatum could make almost x2 in money.

He is eligible for more than the standard max for players of his experience, under the Derrick Rose rule.  Instead of the standard 25% of the salary cap that he would have been limited to, he can now earn up to 30% of the cap.

As far as the super max is concerned:

In addition, a free agent can sign a super-max contract if he has eight or nine years of service and meets the required performance criteria. However, a player is eligible to sign a super-max deal only with his current team, and only then if he has not been traded at any time since his first four years in the league. It’s this technicality that recently cost Paul George, Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler and Kawhi Leonard their potential Designated Veteran eligibility. Anthony Davis is eligible, but as we know, he has already informed the Pelicans that he will not re-sign with New Orleans.

This is from an article that's about a year and a half old but I don't think anything has changed since then.

Ok thanks.

The "Rose Rule" allows any player that is still on his rookie contract to make up to 30 percent of a team’s salary cap (up from the original 25 percent), if that player: has twice been voted an All-Star starter, has twice been voted to one of the three All-NBA teams, or has won an MVP award.

Tatum has NOT made All-NBA twice yet so I don't he qualifies for the "Rose Rule".  Has this rule changed?

Just to clarify - he can make anywhere between 25% and 30% of the cap and that is something that will be worked out in extension talks this offseason between Danny and Tatum's agent. For example, because Siakam made 2nd team All-NBA, the max for his contract will be at 28% instead of the usual 25%. This % was agreed upon last offseason when Siakam signed his max extension.

Based on Tatum's progression, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cs go for the full 30%, but I still think it will be a player option in year 5 so that Tatum can reach supermax one year sooner...which is kind-of a bummer for the Cs future salary cap. I suppose I shouldn't be worrying about 5 years down the road, though.

I believe the wording is "all nba team in most recent season" or "twice in the past 3 seasons." So correct me if I am wrong, but if an extension is signed this off season, it would apply. If he played out next year, and didn't make the All nba team, then he could not sign it. Right? Cap rules aren't my strongest area of expertise.

Yes. The criteria are now:

1. Making an All NBA team in the most recent season, or the 2 preceding seasons
2. Winning MVP in any of the previous 3 seasons
3. Winning DPOY in the most recent season, or the 2 preceding seasons

It's the same criteria as the "designated veteran" rule that allows players to make 35% of the cap before they have 10 seasons of experience.

See Larry Coon's CBA FAQs for reference
I'm bitter.

Rose Rule has definitely messed up the Celtics from keeping both Kyrie and getting Davis at the deadline huh

But I'm glad we don't have to keep a headcase and a player who doesn't have his heart set for Boston.

That is literally the most baffling part about the Rose Rule. Why did it matter that they would have acquired both DPRE players by trade? What's worse, is not only did it likely prevent a possible dynasty from our side, but it also very well might allow the Lakers to get their 17th as soon as this season. I know we don't like Kyrie now, but perhaps he would have been in much more of a good 'mood' if we had him, AD, Tatum, Hayward, and Horford as a core moving forward.

Exactly my thoughts. Though I think to have Davis we'd have to surrender both Brown and Tatum and/or Smart to start off...and making sure he signs an extension with us.

But hindsight 20/20. Horford is crap now. Hayward would have been more free able to play his spot. Look at the Lakers, poised to tie us in banner counts now. Have to hope Denver beats them

On the other hand, it really helped us by preventing us from trading Tatum for a guy who didn't want to play here.

It ruined OKC's chance at a dynasty, though (well, that and their cheap owner)
