I'm treating this whole Covid season with all the disruptions as one big audition for Cam for the permanent job. They'll never admit it but I suspect Bill and Josh are too.
Do you think they'd give him a long-term deal going into his age-32 season?
I guess it would all depend on how much he wants. He's got some miles on those legs for sure. I think it would be worth the risk at the right price though. Right now at $1.75m he's the 6th highest paid quarterback in the NFL on an annual basis. If you look at others in his similar age bracket when they signed their contracts, you have:
Russell Wilson 30, 4yr $140m, $35m AAV
Kirk Cousins 31, 2yr $66m, $33m AAV
Ryan Tannehill 31, 4yr $118m, $29.5m AAV
Matt Ryan 32, 5yr $150m, $30m AAV
Alex Smith 33, 4yr $94m, $23m AAV
Case Keenum 32, 3yr $18m, $6m AAV
I'm not as familiar with the NFL cap as I am with the NBA one, I do know it's a hard cap...but I think if he performed really well and fit in with the team I don't see a reason why they wouldn't give him a multi year deal as long as the price is right.
