A pretty disturbing video of Delonte west is making the rounds tonight, I will try to find a link. It is pretty disturbing, he’s obviously suffering greatly from mental illness

Very, very sad to see Delonte end up like that. Wish the NBA had a better support system in place for players with mental health issues. This should not happen.

First of all the guy who beat him should really be held to answer.

Second, the NBA should step up to take care of one of their own. This looks like a real case of mental illness therefore he should qualify for federal disability and medical benefits.

Wish the entire country had a better support system for people with mental illness.

beat me to it. having to rely upon employers for such support makes no sense.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Still, the NBA is more than wealthy enough, and their number of employees small enough that this should never be an issue. The league does publicity promoting mental health but what do they actually offer to their players?

What the Rockets did to Royce White , basically forcing him out of the league for his anxiety issues instead of supporting him, was awful.

Seeing Delonte West end up like this should be downright embarrassing for the league.

I disagree with this ....we claim to run a Capitalist system of government. Mental illness is a medical problem. We have ceded a vast majority of medical care in this country to the employer. A large number of people derive their medical care from their employer. So you cannot remove the employer from mental illness unless of course you want to reinforce the unfair stigma attached to mental illness. The NBA should step in here if only it is to guide him towards the government programs that exist.

I know this thread is about an individuals but the issues raised go to the very core of the healthcare debate in this country.

The thing is, if it was something like a knee injury he'd have the best medical care in the country available to him. If it's a mental health issue, he gets booted out of the league and left to downspiral into homelessness. That should never happen.

Totally agree. Clear case of assault and that person should be found and prosecuted.

1) I agree. That's arguably attempted murder.

2) Why is this the NBA's responsibility? They paid the guy million$, he isn't suffering from mental illness or whatever his issue is due to the NBA. If anything, the player's union should be helping him out.

Delonte has been battling mental health issues for a long time. A decade ago he was arrested after being pulled over by a cop and had 3 guns on him. I think he had issues even when he was a Celtic, though he managed to play very well while he was here. I think when he was with the Mavericks at one point he was sleeping in the locker room because he was homeless.
