It's hard to say.
Kemba (26 / 5 / 4) and Jayson (22 / 8 / 2) have been so good this year - especially at the end of games - that it's very hard to imagine the team even contemplating trading either of those two guys. I think they are golden core Danny is going to want to build this team around.
Brown (17 / 7 / 2) and Hayward (16 / 7 / 4) have also played really well so far - plus Brown just signed a huge extension and Hayward is a personal friend of Brad Stevens, so it seems hard to imagine either of those guys being traded either.
That said, Boston has shown in the past two games that they can play some strong basketball with just three of those four guys out there on the court (and Smart starting).
if Danny stats to feel that the team is severely held back by their weakness at the center spot, or by their lack of bench depth, and that either of these two weaknesses is the difference betyween the team being a contender or not...then it might make some sense to consider moving either Brown or Hayward to bring in a quality big man or a couple of strong support players off the bench.
The good thing is so far Hayward should be starting to convince GM's around the league that he is pretty much back to his old self, and Brown should also be showing GM's around the league that he's a legit young talent - so if the Celtics *did* decide to move either player, it seems like they should get a pretty impressive return.
I mean, if you look at teams out there:
- OKC (Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari, Chris Paul, Nerlens Noel)
- Golden State (Draymond Green, Kevon Looney)
- Houston (Clint Capella, PJ Tucker, Eric Gordon)
- Portland (Pau Gasol, Jusuf Nurkic, Hassan Whiteside)
- Memphis Grizzlies (Andre Iguodala, Jae Crowder)
- Detroit (Andre Drummond, Blake Griffin, Reggie Jackson, Markeif Morris)
- Cleveland (Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson)
There are quite a few teams out there who could find themselves underachiving and wanting to unload key veteran contracts that could potentially give the Celtics a really big boost either in the starting frontcourt or off the bench.
For example, lets say the Rockets decide they want to blow up the team, so they offer you Clint Capella ($14M) and Eric Gordon ($14M) for Gordon Hayward ($32M). The Celtics lose one of those big four, but in return they gain a 25 year old defensive-minded big who is legit stating calibre (Capella) and a dependable volume scorer off the bench (Gordon). Could a move along those lines potentially be the type of move that puts this team over the top as a legit champion ship contender for the next 3-5 years?
If Danny thinks so then you can bet your butt he will pull the trigger.
