Report: Zion Williamson measured at just 6-foot-6

The NBA’s new policy to list precise heights of players without shoes has claimed its first notable victim.

No. 1 pick Zion Williamson was listed as 6-foot-7 Duke, which was already short for a big man. He’ll be listed as even smaller with the Pelicans.

Shams Charania of The Athletic:

Zion Williamson measured officially at 6-foot-6, league sources said.

It’s unclear whether Williamson will develop into more of a power forward or center. Though 6-foot-6 is short for either position, his hops, strength and mobility are special. Williamson should be just fine.

The only center listed so short since the NBA-ABA merger was Chuck Hayes. The last All-Star power forward listed so short was Charles Barkley. Both were also listed at 6-foot-6.

However, these are apples-to-oranges comparisons. Barkley said he has been measured at 6-foot-5 and shorter. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Draymond Green, a more-recent big-man All-Star listed at 6-foot-7, is actually 6-foot-5.

In a new world of precise shoeless heights, Williamson might not be such a huge outlier at 6-foot-6.

This is going to be interesting.  Nearly every player in the league is going to shrink by 1 to 2 inches.  I suspect Tatum will still be 6'8".  Tacko might shrink all the way down to 7'6".

Are they actually remeasuring players, or just having the listed heights for guys coming into the league be barefoot (while leaving existing measurements as-is)?
I'm bitter.

It sounds like all players will be measured, but this is the first I've heard of it.

NBA teams were notified this week that they must certify and submit the precise height and age for every player within the first week of training camp, league sources tell @NYTSports

This is fantastic news. I have been a stickler for getting to the bottom of heights for years. It's odd, people have gotten mad for saying Horford is 6'8" not 6'10"

Smart is 6'2" not 6'4". I really don't mind if they inflate the players height an inch or so but we all should know what their true no shoes height is because that's how we're all measured at the doctor's office that's my point of view.

Now it's not soooo bad we have a 6 ft 5 power forward in Grant Williams.

It does not say the measurement needs to be without shoes. Player heights are usually understood to be with shoes on unless otherwise specified.

Height will be measured with players' shoes OFF, I'm told. Player weight will not be sought because that number fluctuates so often ...

It's about time the NBA got serious about this and starts providing people with the actual height without shoes. This will be very interesting.

Really seems like Larry Johnson is the comp for Zion.

He's still taller than Barkley.

Until Grant gets remeasured at 6’3”.  :)

I still think Zion is widely overrated...
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Me too. But I don’t think he’ll ever be an absolute bust like Anthony Bennett, or what Fultz is trending towards. He seems like he has an amazing motor, and a willingness to bang down low. At worst he’ll be a formidable starter on a not-so-great team.

Another comparison to Zion would be another Williamson, Corliss Williamson.

Had a very good career, winning a championship in 2004 and 6th man of the year in 2002.
