So, hmm ... not who I thought would be available.

So, with the 5th pick of the 1st round, the Atlanta Hawks select Wilt Chamberlain.

I thought for sure that Wilt would be gone by now. Not really the guy or the direction I wanted to take but what the heck ... Wilt is awesome!
Wow very interesting. Think you're looking at Wilt's entire career more than one specific season though.

Nah. If it was his whole career, I'd value him less. It's his peak that was absolutely phenomenal.

Whole career value him less = selfish early in career (so hard to pair him with other stars like in a game like this). Knee injury late in career that hurt mobility (wouldn't be able to defend adequately under modern rules). So that middle part is the really valuable part. Far more so than the years either side.

1967 was an incredible season for Wilt. 24ppg, 24rpg, 7.8apg, 68% FG%. Led his team to a title after a record breaking (at the time) 68-13 season. Best team offense in the league. 2nd best team defense. Played with multiple other stars on that Sixers team and worked well with them.

Great pick, Magic is honestly, a top 5 player all time on almost every single list.

It was the right choice.

He’s the guy I would have taken.  I’m interested to see who you put around him.

Four picks in, and my #1 is still on the board.
Interesting, I thought Jordan is the clear cut #1. Look forward to your pick!

I'm leaning towards 1990-91 season for Jordan, which I like for a few reasons:
1) He was utterly dominant offensively (54% fg, 31.5ppg, got to the line a ton) and defensively (3rd in DPOY voting).
2) Best TS% of his 6 championship seasons in regular season AND in playoffs.
3) He blew through lots of marquee rivals in the playoffs that postseason which I expect to encounter in this game
4) He played a lot of point guard in the Finals where he averaged 11 assists per game, which gives me the ability to use him flexibly.
5) Part of drafting MJ in general was I feel like the shooting guard position is thinner than other positions in this draft.

There are two other players who if I drafted I could in very good faith see myself trying to sell as having a similarly dominant single season to build around.  I won't name those two players.  I might even be open to trading MJ for one of them.

I had Magic in a previous draft so I didn't want him this time round.

Magic was a lot of fun to build around.

The guy just makes everyone else around him better. What a terrific quality to have in your best player. So far, Magic and Larry are the two players who exemplify this quality the most. Because of that I think they are the most fun to build around.

Once he and Wilt were still on the board after 4, I was pretty excited as they are perhaps the 2 players more than any other that create incredible mismatches.  Magic because he is just so darn tall for a PG, and Wilt because he has the speed of a guard, but is BY FAR the strongest player the league has ever seen.  Mismatches like that create a real advantage in this sort of league.  But as you say it makes finding the right type of players more challenging.  I have a couple of wish list guys for round 2 who I think would be great next to Magic, but the challenge is definitely finding the right mix.  I also have to figure out if I'm going to use a later or earlier season of Magic.  2 different skills sets when he was the #1 guy verse the #2 guy to Kareem.

Magic wasn't good enough defensively for me to take first overall, but I thought about him as an option at #4 and I think he yields good value at #6.  I could have seen him going anywhere 2-8.  It's nice to land a player who's the undisputed best at his position.  Magic is a guy you can really build a great team identity around.

I am pretty sure I won the 2nd Historical Draft with Magic as my first round pick. I think he is a tremendous get at #6.

Ah I forgot about that season while reading a ton of reports and stats lol. Yeah it was great, but imo not #5 great. Too demanding of a game to build around while not being dominant enough in terms of team lift to me I guess, but it could work with the right players around him. Definitely not a bad pick, just think there were better options out there.
