Makes sense -- PG is a FA in two years, so Kawhi doesn't want to get stuck by himself on that team if things don't work out and PG decides to leave.

This was posted in another thread, but I don’t know why anyone is surprised.  This makes him eligible for the 10+ max contract in 2 years — I’d have been shocked if he did something else.  The Clips can then use his Early Bird rights to sign him to a 3+1 with max raises, or his non-Bird rights to sign him to a 1+1 max, followed by a 4+1 with max raises using his full Bird rights.

His move, I think, is giving notice to the Clippers to assemble a title-contending team within the next two seasons. It also gives him time to rethink his options after the 2nd year while he could still be a sought after talent by that time.

Clips have traded their future for a 2 year shot at winning it all.  Kawhi still holding all the cards as long as he stays healthy.
For LA that's the cost of doing business in today's player run NBA.
