That has always been a stupid criticism anyway.
Players who suck don't get playing time. Players who don't suck get to play. Rookies frequently suck, so many of them don't play. With time, some of those rookies learn to not suck, and then they get to play - like Avery Bradley. Many of them keep sucking though, and those players wash out.
It's not complicated, and I never felt that Doc had a poor grasp of this. Which mistreated rookie has gone on to have a distinguished NBA career? When he leaves young players on the bench, time almost always shows his decision to be correct.
