I expect he'll stay in Toronto on a 1+1. If he does, Ainge won't look so great backing off on Davis. Letting his agent plus the media control events.
If Leonard goes to LAL, Danny won't look so great, either. It will show that Davis had a domino effect--attracting another top FA. If Davis had gone to Boston, Leonard probably wouldn't have considered the Lakers. But Davis is definitely an incentive.
So, either way shows how Danny might have benefitted if he pulled the trigger. He could have traded Tatum and Brown for Davis, then perhaps kept Horford and signed either Irving or Walker. That would have been a better team for next year. And who knows what would have happened after that.
There is the question as to whether Davis would have kept Irving and Horford around. And whether all of this was affordable. But you figure the trade would offset Davis' salary, and basically they would be in about the same salary position they are now. My guess it was doable. And they might still have Horford and Irving with Davis here. If not, they have Davis, Walker, Smart and Hayward as the core. Or maybe they attract somebody else because of Davis. Maybe Durant? Insurance in case Davis leaves next year? Dominoes can lead in a lot of directions.
