Does anyone know if we got a trade exception in this double sign and trade deal?   That could really come in handy during the season.   Otherwise I’m trying to make sense of this double sign and trade other than doing Rozier a solid to get his money, and exchanging 2nd round picks. Lol

No exception. The Hornets did not have cap space to trade into.

It's doing Rozier a solid to get him a starting job in Charlotte. It gives the Hornets an exception.

Also, from the looks of the protection, the 2nd round pick exchange favors the Cs.

It's more of a formality. Rozier and a 2nd for Walker and a 2nd isn't a fair trade on paper, but it is if Rozier wanted to go to Charlotte and Charlotte wanted a replacement for their point guard they were losing.

Perhaps Ainge explored a trade earlier in the season and was able to gauge interest?  Not going all in for Davis May have signaled he knew Kyrie was leaving.

One person not mentioned in any of these threads is Rozier's agent, Aaron Turner.

Negotiating a contract for $19,000,000 for 3 years is simply incredible for someone with Terry's resume. If one simply looked at his performance in the 2018 playoffs, then maybe it's somewhat plausible. But given his overall play....it's simply an overpay in my opinion. 

Turner's got to be the superstar of signing agents.

Report: Hornets Offered Kemba Walker $60 Million Less Than Potential Max Contract

Kemba Walker wished to stay with the Hornets in free agency, but he looked for a different team after Charlotte offered him a deal $60 million less than his potential max contract, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Walker was eligible for a five-year, $221 million deal in free agency after earning an All-NBA spot in 2018-19. He was open to a deal "even slightly less" than $190 million, but sought other teams after Charlotte's offer "was just under $160 million over five years," per Charania.

“Tough days, f---ing tough days, I can’t even lie,” Walker told Charania. “It was difficult. I couldn’t see myself just being on another team. It was just hard. That’s all I’ve known was Charlotte. Definitely some tough times. I had a feeling that I wasn’t going to get the offer that I wanted, and maybe not close to it, because of cap space."

Walker reached a four-year, $142 million deal with the Celtics on June 30. The Hornets opted to sign former Celtics point guard Terry Rozier to a three-year, $58 million deal after losing Waker.

The UConn product averaged a career-high 25.6 points per game in 2018-19. The Hornets failed to make the playoffs in six of Walker's eight years with the organization, reaching the postseason in 2013-14 and 2015-16.
