So, 2021 is in play again for a few teams? He can opt out after two years. Did not expect a short contract.

probably the main reason is to get to the 10 year max, but sure there are other benefits to shortening the deal by a year

Yep.  I expect heíll out opt in 2 years, sign a 1+1 to get the 10 year max, and then a 4+1 when the Clippers have full Bird rights after the first year of his 1+1.  Of course, a short deal or two also gives him flexibility in case he doesnít like playing in LA or for the Clippers as much as he thinks he will.

And Lebron's contract ends then too. Hmmm.....Bet the Knicks are already planning to attempt to make another strike at getting someone to go to their franchise.

Under next CBA, player and team opt outs should be reciprocal. In other words, a player can't have an opt out unless the team also has an opt out. And vice versa. Otherwise all the risk is on the franchise.  Needs to be more balanced.

Or just eliminate the opt out entirely, as reciprocal opt out effectively makes the last year bogus, the more I think about it.

Itís a player option.  Team options exist too, as do non-guaranteed and partially guaranteed contracts.  Itís a negotiating tool.  Some players can get them, some canít, but I donít see the problem.  The Knicks just signed a ton of guys to multi-year deals with team options this summer.  Flexibility goes both ways.  And mutual options exist too ó a team and player option in the same year.

I understand. But what typically happens is this: Player A is a superstar.  He will have the bargaining power to negotiate the player option.  Player B is a role player.  His team will have the power to have the team option.

I'd rather just get rid of it for players and teams, so that superstars will not have the option anymore. Every max contract that is signed these days has a player option for the last year. It creates too much certainty. Teams should gladly give up the team options; they'll just have to make a decision whether or not to sign the roll guy for the extra year or not (usually is a case of 1/1).
